I also invented a one dimensional chess game, called Rutherford's 1 dimensional Shogi, that I was rather proud of. I have since revamped my rules and have submitted them (look for Ito Shogi in the near future). I was having difficulty coming up with a playable game with orthodox chess rules, and found that I could use Shogi to create a playable 1-d game. I must hand it to you, however, that String Chess is one of the best 1-d chess variants I've seen. You use some clever methods to make a good game. Bravo.
