Game Courier Chess Variant Problems. Solve Chess Variants Problems Composed with Game Courier.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

I have changed how Game Courier can be used for composing Chess Variant problems. It's now more sophisticated, and any problems published with it can be found on this page. It's time for some beta-testing. Try composing some problems and let me know if you have any problems.

To illustrate how easy it is, I have composed several mate-in-one problems from old games. Just find a game that ended in checkmate, go back a move, and click Compose. Then make sure the winning move is the only possible winning move. If any other moves could win, just adjust the position to prevent them from being winning moves. Then click Move, enter the solution, click Compose, fill in your userid and password, then click Publish.

You should add the option to change the icons used when displaying the problem. Also, sometimes it says the user input is banned.

I've added the ability to change the piece set when viewing a problem. I'll add more customization options later. I also plan to fix how moves are handled by the problem composer. The problem right now is that it is treating move input as though it is intended for playing a game instead of just rearranging pieces. In the meantime, GAME Code commands can be used to move pieces in ways that bypass bans on some types of moves, and manually entered moves can bypass some of the limitations of moving by mouse.

Okay, the banned() function now does nothing in the problem composer, and the ! at the beginning of invisible spaces gets replaced with an _ in the problem composer, allowing pieces from these spaces to be moved around normally.

I have now added the ability to publish a problem without a solution. This is useful when recreating compositions from a book whose solution is not immediately obvious. This page now has the ability to filter for solved problems, unsolved problems, and any problems.

Abbot Chess Problems 121
Problem #1 Mate in Two

There is a difference in my solution and yours, basically the difference
comes from the fact that the black king can take the white horse.
How about Qh8h3
Kx (the horse)
queen goes under black queen to checkmate
.....

I forgot the page and chess places so I failed the annotation

If White begins with Q h8-h3, Black can respond by capturing the Queen with the Knight at g1. This costs White the Queen without improving White's ability to checkmate Black. Being able to capture the White Knight with the King does Black no good, since it leads, as your example showed, to immediate checkmate. When White's object is to mate in so many moves, Black's object is to prolong the game. After Q h8-h3, N g1-f3 prolongs the game, but K c3-d4 does not.

A number of questions for Fergus about possible alternative uses (if allowed) for the Game Courier Chess Variant Problems feature:

1) May chess variant endgame studies be entered (rather than just problems with mate in x moves)?

2) Similarly, may examples of chess variant endgame technique be entered (e.g. just sample variation(s), plus possible commentary, given of how archbishop and pawn(s) beats rook and equal pawn(s))?

3) Also similarly, may examples of chess variant middlegame (or opening) strategy or tactics be entered (again, just sample variation(s), plus possible commentary)?

4) If some or none of the above three is allowed, might these be supported in some other way at some point on CVP?
