Dear friends!I would like show to You shortest 'fool mat' in Grand and
Gothic Chess.
Shortest mat in Grand Chess!

1.Rook jf1- Cardinal f7(Moves like B+N)
2.Rook ad1- Cardinal e6
3.Cardinal e1 -Marshall e7(Moves like R+N)
4.c4 -Cardinal d4x

Shortest mat in Gothic Chess (Opening set up)- R,N,B,Q,M,K,C,B,N,R. In
Gothic Chess Marshall(moves like R+N-named Chancellor),Cardinal(moves
like
B+N-named Archbishop)

1.Ch3-f5
2.Ai5-h6
3.Ag6x.

I think it is good example shows us where safety of King is higher. In
Grand Chess safety of King is higher then in Gothic Chess.

http://www.chessvariants.org/large.dir/capafool.html

is a web page with a fool's mate (in GIF animation) for one of
Capablanca's variants. This one and a half move mate also works in
Capablanca's original 10x10 variant.

Some mates are more foolish than others, consider the following example
from Grand Chess: 1.d3-d5 e8-e7 2.Ke2-d3 Qd9-h5 3.Qd2-e2 Qh5-d5 mate.

There are 398 fools mates in 3 moves in Gothic Chess. Here's an
Archbishop-only mate

1. Af3 h6 2. Ah5 h6 3. Ag6++

In Sam Trenholme's 'Schoolbook' variant: 1.e4 g6 2.f4 Kg7 3.Bf2 Kh6
4.Bi5 is a Fool's Mate in more than one sense, as in French the bishop is
called a fool. This looks like the shortest possible mate by one of the
lesser pieces.

Is it OK if I add this fool's mate to the Schoolbook description page, using the words 'David Paulowich found the following 4-move fool's mate that mates with a bishop: 1. e4 g6 2. f4 Kg7? 3. Bf2 Kh6?? 4. Bi5#'?

Quite clever. Note that, since the pawns are more defended in the Schoolbook opening setup than they are in FIDE Chess, we need to pull out the King before we can mate him with the bishop. This stronger defense does not, IMHO, make the game more drawish--having a lot more force on the board more than compensates.

Be my guest. Your Schoolbook opening setup looks interesting. But there
are so many CapaVariants on this site that I may never get around to
assigning ratings to them.

David,

I can see why it is that you consider the Schoolbook opening setup interesting (note that the Schoolbook setup actually predates this comment, if barely). I also consider something you thought up of on your own a very interesting opening setup for 8x10 chess setups.

I think the original carrera setup for everything besides the very powerful pieces is the best 8x10 setup; the Grand Chess world champion seems to agree.

1.g2-g4 i7-i6 2.Unicorn h1-g2 Unicorn h8-i7 mates in Lions and Unicorns
Chess. I will add a 'shortest mate' note to my TenCubed Chess.
