It is curious that you see a similarity to Canyon Chess, as the way of making pieces more mobile on a difficult board is quite different. There are more obvious connections with Berolina Chess and a 'regina inclusive' form of Lambeth Conference Chess. The term Chasm has been used in Snark Hunt, although in that variant is the (otherwise normal) Pawns that cross the Canyons radially.
