I have pondered how the heck to do a 3 player variant that works on an 8x8 board that would be also fair.

It's not bad, but 'I was kicking around the idea of how to do a 4 player game of chess on an 8 by 8 board' - such game was probably the world's first chess variant - Chaturanga. It can be played by modern rules simply moving elephant as modern bishop and giving pawns duble step (and en-passant).
It's interesting to make 3-players game on 8x8 board.

It definitely is Beer and Bits in nature. It started out as a way to do 4 player chess on a regular chessboard, but has mainly been a two player game actually. Has a bunch of twists and turns. Perhaps the best way to think of it is as 'Desert Warfare' because there is a lot of mobility in the game and little resources.

Hey, Rich. We've played several games in Poughkeepsie recently. That was a nice little game - little in that the number of pieces is quite low. We used the queen, chancellor, and archbishop, with the 'racing kings' optional rule. [Heh, you won that game, too. When are we going to talk about the games I won?!? :-D ] It's a nice game, fast-paced, with some twists and turns. I enjoyed it. Initial placement is important, and varies according to the particular rules used. This is what for wargames was called a 'beer and pretzels' game.

Hey Joe Joyce, please let the world know your thoughts on this, with the game we played. I thought it went well. We did the two player version with breakaway king win condition. We used piece recycling promotion, which is opposite the way the game is normally. It is interesting though that this game, which I designed as a 4 player chess variant, worked well as a 2 player only game.

Played this recently, except the pawn promotion rules were opposite. I would recommend this as a variant. In the way that it was played recently, player have one rook (Marshall), one bishop (Cardinal) and one Queen. When a Pawn promotes, it only promotes to a captured piece.

The version played was 2 player only.
