It is probably like you expect: diagonal movement is
possible from c2 to b3, but not from c1 to a3. Knight's
moves are always possible. Pawns starting from the 
1st rank promote on a8, b8. c..h10, i8, j8.

The capture in the initial position is indeed possible,
but not necessarily a good move.

Just two questions: the ones I always have about boards with concavities. Firstly are moves such as from d1/c2 to b3/a4 allowed? Secondly are Pawns allowed to reach adjacent armies' camps through capture, and if so where do they get promoted? The rules of Vierschach suggest affirmative answers to both questions, but as this would allow a first-move capture (unlike in standard games) I can see a case for the answer to the first at least being no.
