Well if you want to get pedantic about the first use of the name Chogi on these pages, I would point out that it was the name of one of my Year of the Pig Variants of 2nd February 07 - very early in the last such year. By my calculation that precedes the Maxson variant (22nd July 07) by over 5 months and the Correia one (11th May 09) by 27. The pages on large Shogis identify Cho as an actual Japanese word, meaning boar.
Take a look at this variant created by me http://www.chessvariants.org/index/msdisplay.php?itemid=MLchogi
That's interesting!
It's rather a Shogi variant (with extra rook&bishop, only 1xgold, shogi-chess pawn move, no Lance, ...)
Finding Shogi equipment is not always easy (boards and pieces). Here, we can enjoy reusing orthodox-chess boards, and kind of orthodox-chess pieces.
But, on the other hand, there will be needed 2 sets of chess pieces (each with 4xQueens/Silver), and moreover 2xGold new pieces (that differ from Silver/Queen piece).
You're saying that: 'Use the second chess piece set to represent the promoted pieces.'
Like it was said before, promotion discs would be an easier solution
But whatever, a second set of pieces is needed if you want to play 'black' against 'white', as captured pieces change their color.
(oponents can't play the same color, because pieces rook+pawn+king+queen are not shape-directionnal pieces)
The pieces set I designed can be suitable for playing it ;), with only one set of pieces and promotion discs (magnetized).

Maybe that would be a good idea to make the Zillions rules for Chogi, in order to evaluate the 'playability/complexity' of such a game.

See. neither chess nor shogi has nonroyal kings maybe they can promote to goldrooks
'pawns can only be dropped on the penultimate rank' Do you mean that pawns can drop anywhere except last rank? I do not like rule that drops cannot give checkmate because mate with drop is such big part of shogi. If you want game to go in direction of shogi I think pawn promote to queen is too strong and not like shogi, maybe pawn promote to nonroyal king. Pieces going back to unpromoted when captured is good rule. Queens gain nothing by promoting, knights gain more than rooks or bishops, this is possible balance problem but possibly not. Good effort. Chessgi still has advantage it is playable with two standard chess sets. Chogi needs way to show promoted piece from unpromoted, but is not very big problem I think players could put checker under promoted piece.
