Check out Symmetric Chess, our featured variant for March, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, (zzo38) A. Black.

Seventeen Pawns

This is based on Sixteen Pawns but somewhat difference and made a symmetric game based on such ideas.

Setup

Same as FIDE chess.

Pieces

Same as FIDE chess. Notice you will need extra pieces available since the queen can be replace by pawns.

Rules

Rule of FIDE chess follows, except, each player can, as a move, remove opponent's queen from the board and place nine opponent's pawn on vacant spaces in opponent's second, third, and fourth rank, of your choice. Pawns in second rank can move double step. (This includes even queen gained from promotion.) Placing pawns in the space vacated by the queen is permitted. If there is not nine vacant spaces in opponent's second, third, fourth rank, then you are not allowed to do this.
