Piece graphics[Subject Thread] [Add Response]

For the time being I uploaded a 33 x 33 version of the XBoard piece set to the membergraphics page belonging to my Elven Chess article. These are the available images for the white pieces:

The filenames have a 'w' prefix, and .png extension fixed to the given root names. To use them on this website, write something like

<img src="../membergraphics/MSelven-chess/wrook.png">

in your HTML submission. Of course each of those images is also available in black; in that case the prefix is a 'b'.

In the diagrams on your own computer you would have to set:

graphicsDir=http://www.chessvariants.com/membergraphics/MSelven-chess/
graphicsType=png
whitePrefix=w
blackPrefix=b

And you would of course have to make sure the (root) name you use for the individual pieces is correct. For the orthodox pieces they are the same as for alfaerie, but alfaerie for instance uses 'cardinal' for 'archbishop', and many people prefer the glyph I named 'crownedbishop' for the Archbishop anyway.

It is probably easier to just edit the digram description you already have than to design a new one. In the lines with piece descriptions the image root name is the last item before the list of starting squares; the format is

name:ID:betza move:image name:square list

where an empty ID is derived from the name, and empty name or image name are derived from each other. Even an empty betza move can be provided automatically, if the piece is orthodox or a 'common fairy' (such as archbishop, chancellor, camel, zebra).

I now equipped the Design Wizard for interactive diagrams (which by default was set to use Alfaerie) with buttons to recall required graphics settings for various other piece sets, including the XBoard 33x33 pieces shown below. I also improved the script to be more clever in handling annoying differences between the piece sets, such as capitalization of the piece names (which before would prevent the 'Stock' selection from working, as it assumed lower-case image names), and how to obtain the contents of the directory (which is different for the graphics where there is also a web page describing them in that directory), which was preventing the 'Pick' button from working with uploaded member graphics.

This now makes it possible to smoothly use the following graphics in interactive diagrams:
