If I want to read this page, Which character code should I use? It shows gibberish in any of UTF-8, UTF-16LE, Big5, GBK and gb18030.

I don't know what character encoding this page uses. Like you, I haven't been able to figure it out. It could probably do with replacing.

I have just been working on improving the database today. I changed the itemids for your Chinese translations, and I modified the script for listing links to use any language (instead of just English) when listing the pages by a specified author. So, when you go to your profile page and click on "Items this person authored", it will actually list the pages you authored instead of not listing them until someone realizes he should select Chinese and try again.

When I looked at this file in my text editor, the text appeared in Chinese, and there is a meta tag that defines the charset as gb2312. When I try converting it to UTF-8, I get a bunch of gobbledygook matching what you see on the screen.

I have converted this page to Unicode.

I see at the bottom of that page a note saying that it was translated by Altavista's Babelfish. We should probably get rid of it,

The note does also say that one “Cherry X.Z.”, who even had an email address linked in Wayback's copy, ‘modified’ it, which may mean it has had some human input to make it sensible Chinese. But my own Chinese isn't good enough to judge the correctness/idiomaticness(?) of the original page, so I can't weigh in on it from that perspective. I'm happy to leave that up to Editorial Discretion

Since my conversion to Unicode didn't match the previous version at all, I restored the original version from a copy on archive.org. While I don't know much Chinese, I do now recognize some characters in appropriate places. However, since this translation was done by Babelfish in 1996, it may not be such a good translation.

I'll keep it on that basis. Hopefully, we'll eventually get some input from someone who can read Chinese.
