I suggest a new method of introducing an external piece. It could
be used on any board. This method of introducing an external
piece, or two, is probably ideal while the strategical situation
is clarified before play begins.
The players, in their first move, decide
from which file they aim to introduce the
external piece. In this case, the external
piece has previously been positioned
on the knight file. It is introduced to g1 when
the knight moves. Black introduces his piece
when the bishop moves.

I still like the Superchess way of introducing a guest piece best: simply
let one of the sides (e.g. black, out of courtesy) decide on which file the
piece will start, and then replace the back-rank piece in that file by the
guest piece. That way you don't overcrowd the board.

An alternative I sometimes use to test unorthodox pieces is to move an
edge-Pawn one step forward, and put the Knight on the square thus
evacuated. This has minimal impact on the character of the opening, as the
Knight can still reach its favored opening square in a single move move.
The original position of the Knight can then be used as starting square of
the exo-piece.

Overcrowding is not a big problem. Certain pieces, such as the Zeppelin, do not contribute to congestion. The Zeppelin can ignore the pieces and fly to empty spaces. Still, it's not worth more than a light piece. It works like a dream. There are many such pieces. I have introduced the Zeppelin to Pioneer Chess, Alternative Chess and to Accessory Chess. Certain cannons are unproblematical, too, because they can fly.

I have now implemented a variant of the earlier
mentioned method of introducing an external
piece. Introduction now occurs when the pawn
moves away. This includes very many variants
with different external pieces. I have tested the
Camel in this context, too. The Camel is
interesting while it can be exchanged for two
pawns, thus breaking up the position. Zillions
does this often when playing against itself.

The players, in their first move, decide
from which file they aim to introduce the
external piece. In this case, the external
piece has previously been positioned
on the knight file. It is introduced to g2 when
the knight pawn moves. Black introduces his
piece when the bishop pawn moves.

So, we are discussing gating here? I believe gating is an important
contribution to the future of chess. Like about all contributions, there
is a context it fits into. Reserves are key to having handicapping also.
