The Chess Variant Pages

On a chessboard, White has 16 pawns (rows 1 and 2), as well as Black (rows 7 and 8).

Pieces move as in regular chess, including first movement of 1 or 2 squares, en passant capture, and so on, with the following particularities. The first pawn to promote (of each color) promotes to a King. The others promote according to the columns they use to reach the eighth rank ("a" and "h" to rooks, "b" and "g" to knights, "c" and "f" to bishops, "d" to queens). Any pawn that reaches the last row in the column "e" disappears from the game (except if it is the first of its color to get promoted).

Whoever checkmates the adversary's king is the winner. If a blocked position is reached the result is a draw (this covers stalemate and blocked positions with less than two kings on the board).
