Playing on borders (there is a game - Border wars by Jared McComb), at first sight makes new shape, but acrually board is still rectangular (turn it 45 degrees). Playing on hex interesections will make triangular board and vice versa. And what will be if game will be played on borders of hexes and triangles?! And, if it will make new shape, what about playing on corners of borders of these shapes?! And what with other shapes? It's quite interesting way to make new board shapes.
