Daniil, I've actually been working on that. I think it would be more useful if the favorite dropdown from the menu listed the people who have favorited a game (when on that game's page). If I can get that working, is that preferable to listing your own favorites? (I think so, as your favorites are already available from your user profile page.) What should be listed on non-game or non-favorited pages? (Maybe nothing?)
I've added a random selection option to our query script. From the search form on the Topic/Main Index page there is a checkbox for this option. (I don't claim this is very uniformly random. Let me know if you have any problems.) Should we also add a random search link to the menu? Random game page, random Java applet, random something else?

(included in the homepage when hovering over the Shatranj link). Does anyone know the origin of this image?
Ed, I have sent you an email concerning registration.
(Charles:
When you "use html tags", backslashes will be stripped. You can include a backslash in the finished product by using a double-backslash, which I have edited your comment to do, or using the escape code for backslash. Sorry that these methods make your typing of the diagram difficult.
I have also fixed a mismatched i tag in your comment.)
Pritchard mentions in CECV a game with a similar topologically-pentagonal but geometrically-"doubling" board. It is called the Fourth Dimension, but has no 4d characteristics. It is played on a round board with concentric ranks of 4, 8, 16, and 32 cells, a generic cell having one neighbor in the next rank inward, two neighbors on its own rank, and two neighbors in the next rank outward. The pieces don't seem to be particularly chesslike. (Maybe this round version could be realized as almost a pentagonal tiling of the hyperbolic plane?)
Pritchard's CECV lists a game "Xyrixa Chess" by David Samuel c.1980 played on this same board (provided I'm reading correctly). It's not clear at all how the pieces move or whether the inventor knew about any of the geometry facts discussed in the other comments here.
Sorry for the delay. Reviewing backlog is now cleared.
CECV doesn't suggest whether the word Xyrixa has some meaning. Since we now know that this geometry can be viewed as the rhombic dodecahedron tiling, perhaps a name based on that is appropriate. A clever name lacking, I'll use RD for the rest of this message. On RD geometry: it's been noted that it can be viewed as the standard 3D cubic tiling, but using the cubic diagonal as the RD orthogonal (and restricting to one color of the cubic 2-coloring, say black). Charles's RD bishop direction seems to correspond to the cubic dabbabah. Perhaps another interesting direction is the cubic triagonal, which must skip over one white cell. This direction corresponds to passing through a degree-3 vertex of the RD. (The RD orthogonal passes through the faces, and Charles's RD bishop direction passes through the degree-4 vertices.) I'm not quite sure, but I think passing through the edges of the RDs would correspond to a (2,1,1)-leap in the cubic tiling. I haven't thought yet about: do these directions have meaning in the hex-plane parts of RD geometry?
Editorial note: Having had this one brought to our attention, I've cleared its hidden-pending-review status. The item was listed as a Play-By-Mail type, but no link to a preset was given, and the page contents read more like a piece article, so I've re-Typed it as such. The itemid will keep the MP prefix and I've left the board size in case the page gets completed to a game article at a later date.
Since the content has been removed, this page's index entry has been deleted, and the comments moved to their own subject thread, with subjectid=jeppsboardroom .
Namik, before we publish this page, you should describe each of the variants a little more.
[ed. note: page text concerning number of pieces is fixed]
@BoXian: I have sent an email to the address we have on file for you (domain msa.hinet.net). If you cannot access that email, then please email me (address available by clicking on my name at left) about registration.
The CVP have received the following email.
--------------What is your rank?
Writer/Director Tonya Michelle is looking for your support as she launches her Kickstarter campaign today in hopes of raising money to cover costs associated with producing a pilot of the new scripted drama she created called RANK.
RANK takes inspiration from the sometimes edgy and intense action that Michelle has experienced in the Ladera Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Michelle believes that chess has the power to bring communities together regardless of profession or income level and being an avid chess player herself, Michelle hopes to bring this intriguing scene to a wider audience. Michelle’s main goal is to have a chance to create a smart and resonant drama, much like HBO’s The Wire.
For more information about RANK and to support the project, please visit Tonya Michelle’s Kickstarter project at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/519643663/rank-a-new-television-drama-series-chess-just-got
Henry, I think in this game rooks and bishops move as usual (ignoring the rotation of the board).
(Maybe you added it after finding an answer on wikipedia, but that pawn rule currently appears here as rule 3.)
The CVP have received an email with a link to a "modern large shogi variant that seems to adapt chu shogi in ways that your readers may find appealing". The page is in Japanese: http://seesaawiki.jp/nari_shogi/d/%BC%EB%BF%FD
The page was archived, and can be retrieved at

I have deleted this page for being the same as Fish Chess.
Sorry about the outage today folks. Everything should be fine now, but if you run into any problems please email us.
