Well, first of all, I didn't really understand the directions. It was really kind of confusing. but I thought it was a little good. But I would make it a little less confusing. Because I didn't understand anything.*^^*

I kind of wanted to know where it originated from, and, could we have a play button?

If you want to have a go at the game, then have a look at this link:

This is exactly what I was looking for. I know the basic rules of chess,
but wasn't clear about en passant and castling. Now I am and I feel
that I can teach my 10-year-old daughter how to play.

Thanks!

I'm 12 and started playing chess last year and play at school. I printed out the rules so all the kids will know them. Thank you for the info.

I'm still really confused - do you have to play this game with one white player and one black player????? It seems like two white people or two black people could play....HELP!!!!

Tim Stiles wrote on Sat, Mar 8, 2003 04:58 AM UTC:
the colours of the players don't matter...but one set of pieces MUST be white, the other MUST be black and each set MUST belong to a different person, and white MUST be first.

My dad and i were having some dissagrements on chess like en-passant but the moment we went on this site we discovered a 50 move rule and that while castleing a king can't move over a space that can be attacked. tis site is awsome i love. OH my dad was the captian of the chess culb in high school

The rules say: 'Chess is a game, played by two players. One player plays with the white pieces, and the other player plays with the black pieces.' and 'Alternately, the players make a move, starting with the white player (the player that plays with the white pieces.)' Realize that the color of the pieces, 'white' and 'black', is just a convention. The starting player is also just a convention. These are conventions used for convenience and uniformity, which are important for some purposes such as tournament play. Everything about Chess is just a convention. But, conventions can be adjusted. If you want to, start with black. There are many Chess variants that use different piece color conventions, for example there is a Chess variant that uses Gold and Green, with Gold starting. I have a Chess set with with four colors, white, black, red and yellow. I decide which pieces I play with and which starts as it suits my fancy.

This site has a lot of great information for beginning players. To all those who complain that it not actually playing chess, then maybe you should try the link for java chess on this page. If this page was for playing chess, it wouldn't be called 'The Rules of Chess'
