Its been a while since I looked in here, but I've been playing this game
occasionally with friends. Our skill levels are, putting it kindly, rather
low.

However I noticed that over many games, as my friends became accustomed to
the larger playing field, modified their style of play to take advantage of
the added space.

Generalizing from this admittedly limited sample set I suspect equally
matched opponents, when first exposed to a 12x12 game, would initially
play in their comfort zones, i.e. a traditional 8x8 game, but start
experimenting with the bigger field over time.

I will admit that the first and last 2 rows 'behind' the pieces are
typically empty until well into the end game.
