Menu Bar[Subject Thread] [Add Response]

I decided that a menu bar would be more user-friendly than a menu that
remains completely hidden until you hover over the logo. The main advantage
of a menu bar is that it is always visible. This is especially important
for new visitors, who wouldn't otherwise know there is a menu until they
discover it by accident. A menu bar is also a common form of navigation
used in Windows, Macs, and Gnome. When visitors see it, they know what to
do with it. Another advantage is that it makes the main categories visible,
so that visitors can immediately see what the menu bar can be used for.

I have changed the menu in the play subdomain to a menu bar. I plan to
change the one for the main site after I work out the kinks in this one. It
is working well in Windows on Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and
Opera. It is working well in Android on Firefox but has some bugs with Boat
Browser and Dolphin. When I touch a main category in one of these browsers,
it sometimes acts as though I have touched the first item in its submenu.

In general, Game Courier works best on Android in Firefox. Besides not
sharing this bug with Dolphin and Boat Browser, it also can use web fonts.
I have not gotten web fonts to work with Dolphin or Boat Browser.

On phones and small tablets, the menu turns into a collapsible vertical
menu with a larger font, so that it is easier to touch the right item. I
have tested this on only one small tablet, and it seems to be working fine.
It initially just shows the main menu items, and you can go into a submenu
by touching it. You can close a submenu by touching the menu outside any
menu items. This works great for a touch device, but it is somewhat
innavigable with a mouse. So the option of using this kind of menu is not
available unless the User Agent identifies a mobile device. When it is
available, which type of menu used gets determined by the screen size.

Since I don't have a mobile phone to test this on, and I could test it on
only one small tablet, I would appreciate it if those of you who can try it
on a phone or small handheld device can let me know how well it is working
and if I need to adjust the font size.

It turns out that the @media query is an unreliable way to determine the
size of a tablet screen. So I have switched to relying only on the user
agent to determine which type of menu to use. It will use the vertical
collapsible menu only if the user agent contains iPhone, Android, or Touch.
Some of the browsers I use on my Android tablet let you change the user
agent. You can switch between the two types of menu by switching between
Android and Desktop user agents. Firefox on Android lets you request a
desktop version. Over on the iPad, the default browser doesn't let you
change the user agent, though other browsers may. The iPad will use the
menu bar. For some reason I haven't figured out, the vertical collapsible
menu does not work on the iPad, though the menu bar does. Both types of
menu work on Android.

I have now replaced the main site's hidden menu with a visible menu bar. I
have reorganized its contents to fit a horizontal display better. Some
plans I have for this are to add links for playing the game a page is for
under the Play submenu, adding a Sponsors submenu for paid sponsors, and
adding a few more things. I might rearrange the menu a bit, possibly
changing a menu title or two, and suggestions on how to organize it are
welcome.

I've now gotten the collapsible vertical menu to work on the iPad, and I
have set it to use this kind of menu if iPad appears in the user agent.
This is to allow a choice on iPad browsers that let you change the user
agent or at least view a desktop version of a site. Using Dolphin on the
iPad, I looked at the desktop version and saw the menu bar.

The one drawback is that Game Courier will not resize a board to fit the
screen if it receives a desktop user agent. But if you can edit the user
agent manually, you can get resized boards and the menu bar by using the
word Mobile or Tablet in the user agent without using the words iPhone,
iPad, Android, or Touch.

Where is the menu to view the list of your own files which is pending review?

🕸Fergus Duniho wrote on Sun, Mar 24, 2013 05:57 PM UTC:
There isn't one. Since I didn't program that part of the site, I am
unfamiliar with how it works. Where do you normally go to see this? I'll
take a look at the code and see what I can do about adding it to the menu
bar.

It was in the login/logout menu in the top right corner of the screen, but now that is gone, and I cannot find that in any of the new menus.

I've added the pending submission link into the new menu.

I'm not getting anything coming up when I go to the Change Password page
via my membership info page. Has this happened to anyone else? Fergus, do
you know what's going on?

The login/logout menu wasn't removed. It just got moved. When you're
logged in, your personal menu now appears with the other menus. I did not
change the content of this menu. It is the same as it used to be. Also, I
looked at the backup I made of the old header, and I did not see any code
for viewing a list a of files pending review. Perhaps this was something
you can view from your personal information page. The link to that page is
still in your personal menu.

Ben, I think I've seen your name among the list of editors, but no one has
ever told me about you. It's best that you do not edit my files yourself,
because I normally work with my own local copies. If you have in mind
changes to make to them, please pass them through me and let me take care
of it.

A. Black, It appears that the link you were looking for had been added by
someone else without my knowledge. So it wasn't in the local copy I used
to redesign the menu from. But it is there now.

Lately on one of my computers, the menu items are tabbed over by varying
amounts.

Can you provide a screenshot and tell me what browser and operating system
it appears this way in?
