Please urgently let me know how to get in touch with Miguel Quinteros. I’ve known him and R. Fischer for longer than I can remember but have lost track of Miguel. It’s in regards to Bobby being imprisoned in Japan. Please help if you can, or refer me to a place that could get me in touch with Mr. Quinteros. My e-mail address is dheereva@cswebmail.com Thank you very much. Sincerely, Eva Stallings, New York
Fischer Random Chess can be played online on BrainKing.com as well.
Mainz, Germany: In a few minutes, the world chess 960 championship will begin. Also, three other world championships: 1.-Clerical Medical Chess960 World Championship Peter Svidler of Russia faces Levon Aronian of Armenia in an eight-game Chess960 (Fischer Random Chess) 2.-Grenkeleasing Rapid World Champioship World's number two (and rapid chess specialist) Vishy Anand, against 19-year-old Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan, number 11 in the world rankings, in a rapid chess match over eight games. Aronian vs Svidler in their Chess960 match in Mainz two years ago 3.-Clerical Medical Chess960 World Championship for women, seniors and juniors These are eight-game Chess960 (Fischer Random) matches between Elisabeth Pähtz and Alexandra Kosteniuk (Women); Vastimil Hort and Lajos Portisch (Seniors) and Pentala Harikrishna and Arkadij Naiditsch (Juniors). Format: eight rounds
I will not consider this the Chess960 world championship until there is process that includes all grandmasters. This is simply match between Svidler, who expresses support for Chess960, and other willing grandmaster. This match says nothing about whether Svidler is better Chess960 player than Leko, Adams, Kramnik, Anand, etc. I personally would bet on Morozevich if he would play.
The Mainz Chess Classic has begun today (or perhaps yesterday, since as I write this it's already tomorrow in Germany), but according to the official site, the Chess960 championship won't begin until Thursday.
Of course this match alone can tell us only about Svidler and Aronian, but this match is not taking place out of the blue. Lékó became the first Chess960 champion by defeating Adams in 2001. Svidler won the title from Lékó in 2003, and has defended it against Aronian in 2004 and against Almasi in 2005. I've read that the challenger must qualify by winning an open tournament, but it's harder than it should be to find such information from official sources.
It seems to me that Svidler's status as Chess960 champion is more legitimate than that of either Kramnik or Topalov as Chess champion.

There has been no such tournament. I follow chess news closely and such
tournament would have been big event if won by player of Aronian standing.
I am glad to see Chess960 events being played, it is positive development,
but Chess960 championship pedigree is not strong because challengers are
simply chosen by event organizers.
yes you have to win a tournament in order to challenge the champ the following year, this has been going for awhile, anyone can enter, it's all fair enough. What is the reason you don't see this as making a fr champ? I like Moro the best, he is the best natural chess player in the world, not afaird to sac (like kramnik lol), i think he would be the best at fr too, but does he go in these tournaments, you would think he would, will have to look. But, just being a gm does not mean you play fr chess, maybe moro doesn't like it. actually, thinking about kramnik, has he ever played fr chess? i highly doubt he likes it, their is no opening book, kramnik wouldn't even be able to play it ha ha
It seems to be correct, Svidler-Aronian goes on 17th., today have been played other programmed games of the classic. I´m not sure how legitimate is this Chess960 world championship, but, officially, nobody has expressed a different opinion, and the presence od Svidler as defending champion is a good indicative.
Man-machine Chess960 exhibition: Svidler played yesterday against the computer world champion Spike, and the result was a draw. Radjabov was beated by Shredder.
Perhaps winner of FiNet Rapid Chess960 Open held at Mainz each year is challenger for championship match in following year, but I am unable to find confirmation of this.
I also think it is unfortunate that world championshop of Chess960 is played at rapids time control. Qualify of chess would improve, and title of world champion would mean more if games were played at classical time control.
Aronian won FiNet Rapid Chess960 Open 2005, that is why he is challenger. there is no doubt the winner of this tournament is next challenger. yeah the time limit is bad, but what can you do, the sponsors pay the money so ... fr is not main chess, even normal chess not so long ago found their wc with terrible time controls. At least, this is better than nothing. Hey Moro is in it, he must be a big chance to win, that would be great to see him next challenger!
I think there is enough worldwide interest in Chess 960, and not only at very high levels, so a well organized World Championship should be a possible idea, it is only the need of intrepid sponsors and federative initiatives, and I believe there are also good possibilities for it. Pretty horizon for this variant.
In 1996 this was one of the first 100 or so CVPage posts ever. Some news and link for the 2006 Mainz Classic, which includes Chess 960 championship, appear then in these ''all comments'' by Thomas McElmurry.
