Aurelian Florea here. I can't login in. For some reason I keep getting the allow cookies message even if aI allow cookies for all websites. Am I still doing something wrong, or is it a problem with the website?

I temporarily disabled cookies to see if they are required for logging in, and they are. Although your data is stored in a session, the browser uses a session cookie to know which session is yours. If you're using Firefox, there is an extension called Web Developer, which will let you, among other things, look at your cookies. It will also let you disable or enable cookies.

CSS error expected declaration but not found '*' skipped to next declaration.

Javascript error: TypeError:tribar is null

Only with the add-on I can see those.

Login does not work with internet explorer either nor with mozilla with disabled addons or extensions. I'm really sorry to bother you like that Fergus, but it seems we have a problem. Could be something related to the provider or Romania (the country where I am in)? I do not know!

I managed to sign in with a newly created user, but I still cannot sign in with my main user catugo. What does this mean Fergus? Any idea?

I don't know what the cause could be, but like H. G. Muller, your last login was on December 16, 2016. I reset your catugo password and emailed the new password to the address you have on record for that userid.

I can't login with my old account (user ID is MThomas).

I tried to change the password, and I got the email with the link to the page to enter the keyword and new PW, but after entering these it says: "failure to decrypt email adress".

I tried two times, and I'm sure I entered the correct keyword.

What should I do?

I just tried changing my own password as if I had lost it, and it worked for me. So the script appears to be working. If you tried it two times, you might have mixed something up. Each time you request to change your password, it creates a new keyword and a new link for you, and only the latest ones will work. To make sure you are using the right ones, keep the page with your new keyword in your browser, and compare its unique id to the one you get in your email. When you get an email with a matching unique id, you need to use the link in that email to change your password. When I checked your database entry, the privateKey field was not set, which means that you will have to start over.

Hang on. I'm going to change the script to better inform you of obsolete links.

I have now updated the script. If you use an obsolete link, it will inform you of this, and it will tell you how to find the correct link. If you have the correct link, it will tell you the unique id associated with your keyword, so that you are using the correct one.

Joining the Chess Variant Pages is now easier than before. Just fill in your information and get your new password by email. There are no longer multiple stages to go through before you're registered.

If you make a mistake, it is also now easier to delete your account. If you have not yet signed in, you can delete your new account so long as you're still at the same IP address you created it with. If you have already signed in once, you can delete it so long as you have not left any footprint on the site with it.

Hello, long time lurker of this great site! 

I created an account for this years ago as akinfantryman.  I must have written down the email wrong, because I don't believe I ever got an email with the inital sign in information, and I have tried several times to reset the password over the years.  (it recognizes there is an akinfantryman account, but I can't access it.)  I just created this sudo-account, mostly to post this message....I would rather have my usual handle akinfantryman.  Is there any way to recover that account?

hi. 1st thing that should hit u when u arrive on this site is a live game started and picked randomly from all existing chess varients with the user vs a general AI opponent that can play any of the games. This feature is strangely absent. Why?

You want a programmer to make it for you?

Chess V plays some of them including one of mine but you should realize (I think you had punily intended to hint you are yourself a programmer) that is not an easy task to take as such a general AI is rather hard to build. But maybe we should try.

I wouldn't say there is anything strange about its absence. You are the first person who has ever said we should have this, and no such AI exists. At best, we have programs and scripts that have been created to play some games. Even Zillions-of-Games, which has more games available for it than any other program of its kind, can only play those games that have been programmed for it. There is no AI that can read rules written in English and play the game against someone. What this site is the home of is Game Courier, which lets you play Chess variants with other people by correspondence. It is as versatile as Zillions-of-Games with respect to the games that can be played with it, but it is only for correspondence games, not for playing against a computer.

Actually equiping the Interactive Diagram with an AI is one of the (alas many) things on my to-do list. As configuring the diagram for the more common variants is rather straightforward (and a wizard exists to make that even simpler), this would be able to support a large fraction of the variants described here.

Furthermore, the input format for the diagram (currently piece names and their moves in Betza notation) could be easily extended to handle some of the more 'exotic' rules that are common (zoning of the board, limitations to what can capture what, special promotion rules). Currently the diagram can only implement such rules by allowing them to be specified by additional (optional) JavaScript routines on the web page that contains it, which is a bit cumbersome.

I am not sure challenging visitors on the home page by an AI in a random variant is a good idea, though. I do think it would be a good idea to have the possibility in articles that describe a variant to play the latter against an AI. The AI does not have to be strong; in fact it would do more harm than good if it was. It would most likely be used by people that just read the rules for the first time, and it would be rather discouraging for them if they get crushed without a chance. So I am aiming for something that does not entirely play like an idiot, but can be beaten by a beginner who puts in some effort.

A good example of what I am after is the Peace Chess article: this contains a diagram that acts as a simple computer opponent. Eventually I want all articles I authored to contain such a feature. As most of those already contain Interactive Diagrams, this should happen automatically once I equip the script for the Diagram with an AI. That would also bring to life the Diagrams I posted in the Comments section of many articles not authored by me.

For other variants it still would require configuring the Diagram, and putting it on the page, though. Like Fergus says, there is no way yet to compile the English description to a formal rules set on which the AI could act. It is unlikely there will ever be one: the English descriptions are too inhomogeneous for that.

How have you build and implemented the AI in peace chess?

Just a fixed-depth tree search (iteratively deepened) where every move (rather than every turn) counts as a ply, and unfinished release chains are evaluated as a loss. As I really have no idea how this game should be played, there hardly is any evaluation. I just give a penalty for embracing pairs close to your own King, which is extra high when the enemy piece in the pair is actually aimed at your King.

So it basically moves randomly, except that it is pretty clever in detecting possible King captures, and immediately finishes you off when it sees one.

As it is not possible to give away material in this variant, this doesn't lead to completely crazy play.

When you sign up, email is sent immediately. But thanks to some very strict measures that some email providers take to reduce spam, email from this site doesn't always get through. Check your spam folder, and if you still can't find any email, you may delete your new account and try signing up again with an email address from a different email provider.

I'm in the same situation.  My username is as shown (kespethdude).  I want to delete it and try to reregister it using my yahoo account as the gmail thing has still not been fixed.  The delete button doesn't work for me either.

The link to the script was missing from the Delete It button. I have now put it back.

Since you're already registered, you could try changing your email address instead of deleting your account and signing up for it again.

@softburritoz: Your personal information page has you registered 4/19, but your comment dated 4/18.  Does that mean your problem is resolved (or maybe the dates are relative to different time zones)?

The problem is probably that your email address is not receiving email from us, or it is going into your spam folder. If you can't find the email in your spam folder, try a different email address.

I have been unable to log in using the same credentials that worked three days ago. The loging page demends I enable cookies and I have done so for chessvariants.com (my browser is Firefox v72.0.2). But the login page fails to detect that I have done so, and won't let me log in. The login page also complains my adblocker, failing to detect that I have whitelisted this site (Adblocker Ultimate). Other pages of the CVP correctly detect this and don't complain about the ad blocker. Please help asap. I don't know if this is relevant, but my email address on record is a gmail address.

Odd, I can't log in from this login page either, but I can log in through the menu on other pages.  Trying to log in from this page (/login/login.php) takes me to /login/cvplogin.php which hangs.

I don't receive a cookies message on this page, but I can confirm the same adblocker message behavior.

gmail addresses have had problems receiving emails from us, but that shouldn't affect your login, especially not abruptly like this.

The log in for comments https://www.chessvariants.com/index/commentonitem.php?itemid=Login also rejects my credentials with the same cookie error. All other pages refer me to the original login page. Firefox has chessvariant.com listed as an allowed site to accept cookies from, and the current version of Firefox wouldn't let me allow cookies from the whole net, even if I wanted to, just whitelist specific sites.

 I was able to sign in using Microsoft Edge with blanet permission to accept all cookie anywhere (the default for Edge).

I don't use that ad blocker, but as a test, I just disabled uBlock Origin for this site, and I still got the adblocker detected message instead of an ad. In case it was a caching issue, I tried reloading with "Reload Skip Cache", but it didn't help. Looking over my extensions, I don't have any other ad blockers.

Other pages of the CVP correctly detect this and don't complain about the ad blocker.

Yes, I'm getting the same behavior. Maybe there is a bug in this page specifically. But I haven't been able to figure out what it is.

This page had <BASE HREF="http://www.chessvariants.org/login/login.php"> in the head part, and I just changed .org to .com.

Still having the same issue. After a failed login, I checked Manage Data under Cookies and Site Data in my Firefox options, and cookies from a total of five cookies from https://www.chessvariants.com dated about a minute ago were present. Firefox accepted the cookies but your page failed to recognize that fact. The Ad Blocker issue has been resolved.

Thanks for following up.  I checked with Firefox (v66), removing cookies and then logging in, and didn't have a problem.  The cookie whose presence determines that message (I think) is cvpuser, which ought to get populated when you first try to log in.  Is that one of the five that got stored for you?

I'm currently installing a sqlite reader to check the Firefox cookies file. The file isn't very human readable

The cvpuser cookie is not present but __cfduid, __gads, PHPSESSID, __atuvc, and __atuvs are.

Gmail blocked our traffic for some reason.  I think gmail addresses have started working again, though.  I am receiving alerts again.

I am receiving alerts again for a few weeks now.

I signed up for the free version of the email service SendGrid, and I added some CNAME lines to the DNS. This appears to have been enough for our mail to get through to Gmail. I still haven't taken the step of actively sending mail through SendGrid, but I probably should, because mail to some email services is still not getting through.

@Fergus, @Greg: are gmail-address registrations possible then? There's an email in the main inbox looking to do so.

Hello. I'm having a problem with creating an account on this site. I am not receiving the email with password to log-in for the first time. It has been 5 days, and it has not appeared in my inbox, spam, or any other folder.

Thanks to many email carriers having overzealous spam detection, email is no longer as reliable as it used to be. So, I'm contemplating changing how registration works. Like many other sites, it would just require a userid and password. When an email address is given, it would try to verify the email, but inability to verify an email would not keep someone from using his new account. Other email would be sent only to members with verified email accounts, and one would still be required for retrieving a lost password. Whenever an email address is entered, it would make sure it doesn't match any verified email address, and when an email address is verified, it would remove any unverified use of that address.

So far, I have replaced the deadEmail column with the emailVerified column, I have added the dateVerified column, and I have made appropriate changes to some scripts. I have not yet changed how registration works.

I have modified the registration script to register new members without sending email. It will now display the password and provide some instructions for getting started. To make sure it works, I deleted one of my other accounts and recreated it.

Just created an account. From this page I can login with my server-generated password. On the next page there is a 'change password' link. When I click on it, I get "Cannot continue, because the PersonID does not match any in the database."

I get the same thing when I click the "change password" link on my profile page. There must be a bug in the script.

The link was using the PersonID as the value for userid. I changed it to use the UserID, and now it seems to work correctly.

I cannot sign in after I forgot my password because it tells me to accept cookies even though I have already done so. Also, when I press forgot password, I get the message "Cannot continue, because no row in the Person table could be identified."

@QIDb602, please email one of the editors if you haven't already to try to track down what's going wrong.

Forgotten password doesn't work. I also couldn't figure out how to verify my email address as the site doesn't send a verification email. I can login, but it would be nice to get emails when playing.

All that verification checks is whether you can receive our email. If you can't, then marking your account as verified won't fix that. If you really want to receive emails about your moves, I recommend using a Yahoo account, as it accepts our emails better than Gmail does.

I can receive emails from the site just fine. The problem is there's no way to get it verified.

It didn't ask me to verify during the registration.

After registering, I found no menu where the verification was possible. The only way I found was clicking omn my own name in a game, getting here: https://www.chessvariants.com/who/csarmi

Now here I did have an option called "Verify Email" which takes me to this php: https://www.chessvariants.com/login/change_email.php?submit=Verify

It says this: Mail was sent from change_email@chessvariants.com to Máté Csarmasz

That does actually send me an email from change_email@chessvariants.com that contain a link like this (I've anonimized the keyword and code in there: http://www.chessvariants.com/login/change_email.php?userid=csarmi&newemail=(myEmail@gmail.com)&keyword=(keyword)&code=(code)

Clicking that takes me to a page where I get this message:

"Please click the Confirm button to change your email address from myEmail@gmail.com to myEmail@gmail.com". There's a button called "New Email" where my email address is entered.

Looks like a change email form to me.

Nevertheless, I did click that button. After I've done so, the site still says my email address is unverified and I still don't get notification emails to my games.

So what should I do?

I verified Máté's email address and set emailVerified in the database to 1 but I'm told he is still getting messages from Game Courier when making moves that his address is not verified. What am I missing?

I have specially created a Yahoo account for the verification of my email address. It happens exactly what Máté Csarmasz described before. The verification simply does not work. In my person information the Yahoo address is still declared as unverified.

When I tried to test the script for verifying email with my Yahoo address, I never got the email. Looking at email sent to chessvariants.com, I see an email about being unable to deliver this email. It will keep trying until it is five days old, which will be on the 18th. There is a similar email for you, as well as a subsequent one about your email being returned. It is looking like Yahoo Mail has stepped up its spam blocking, which is also blocking even more legitimate mail. Since this server runs on a VPS with a fairly unresponsive hosting company, I'm not sure what to do about improving our mail delivery. That is why I no longer require email verification for creating an account.

I can receive emails from the site just fine. The problem is there's no way to get it verified.

Although I couldn't receive the required email, I cheated by looking at the undelivered email sent to chessvariants.com. Using the code provided in that email, I was able to verify my email address after I fixed some bugs in the change_password.php script. Basically, I had misnamed some columns by reversing the order of the two words composing their names. So, if you can get the email, you should now be able to verify your address.

@editors, I think I had modified the tag display script to--when logged in as an editor--include the tagging users. Did someone [accidentally|intentionally] revert that? It made it easier (it could be done entirely through the website, without going into the database) to scrub related errant tags.

Hi Rose. I like this game! I have one question though. You said, "Queens have the movement options of both rooks and bishops" — I cannot quite understand that, as a Bishop (in this game) cannot access any square that a rook cannot. Could you please clarify? Thanks :-)
