When I saw the setup, I simply rubbed my hands together. 'This is going
to be good.'

One comment though: you haven't specified HOW the pagan moves across
the bridge. I assume that since its move is to short to span the bridge
that it is extended from end to end:

P .
.*-.
.-*.
.--*
   .

With * showing the pagan's path.

the pagan can move across the bridge however it wants. it can even stop on the bridge. to the pagan the bridge is just more normal cells.

Thank you Mickey for this excellent varient! I've been looking for a method by which to combine Steve Jackson's Knightmare Chess and Proteus. Pagan Chess works wonderfully. I've kept the movement of the pieces as standard, but with the King/Pyramid retaining its SJ abilities, the Pawn in the initial rank is replaced with a Knight at start, and I use the Proteus victory conditions.

I too was puzzled by the movement of the Pagan. Perhaps some clarification about the bridge is required in the rules.

I also wonder about the flipped nature of the board and if it benefits black or white. The Pagan is centrally located so one might think this is an advantage for it to be black as the King is hidden better and the White King is near a leap point for it. The Pagan can sit on the bridge and block the White King...

A very interesting variant. I look forward to playing at some point.

One way you could make it symmetrical, is to make the bridge on both sides of the board, and make it cylindrical. I don't know how well it would work, though, because I haven't ever played this game.

I think this is a really interesting game and I would be keen to give it a try. If anyone would like to play it with me, leave me a message and we can play by email.
