This game was played in the 2003 Multivariant Play By E-Mail Tournament. John Lawson played White. Peter Aronson played Black. Black resigns on move 35. See the above illustration.  John Lawson comments: Unlike most of the games in the PBEM tournament, I have some experience playing Grand Chess.  I also prepared slightly by reviewing the first few moves of games played by the winners of various Grand Chess World Championships so I wouldn’t make a big mistake in the opening.  Those game scores are available at <a href="http://www.mindsports.net">www.mindsports.net</a>.  Interesting points in the game to examine are: 6. Pawn d5-d6: I get the opportunity to post a supported pawn on the 6th rank.  Until then Peter had the better of me in the center with a central Pawn and Bishop.  I try to drive the Bishop back, and Peter chooses to exchange for my Knight on move 7. 11. …Pawn d7xc6: A battle rages for control of the King’s side.  I believe that Peter was expecting the response 12. Pawn d6xc7, but I chose 12. Rook c1xc6. This Rook will be a valuable asset for most of the rest of the game. 22. …Queen a5xe5: Most of the last eleven moves have been about attacking or supporting my Rook, which is now on c7.  I have made an oversight here. I’ve been trying to drive Peter’s Queen away, and have allowed him the opportunity to trade it for the Cardinal and a Bishop. I accept the trade in order to maintain momentum and  I also end up with three more Pawns. 25. Rook c7-e7+: This starts some interesting infighting that results in a significant exchange of material that brings the game to a close. Note that the ZSG calls the Cardinal, “Princess”, and the Marshal, “Empress”.
