Notes

<p>This game was played in the 2003 Multivariant Play By E-Mail Tournament.</p> <p>John Lawson played Gold. Tony Quintanilla played Green. Gold wins by checkmate on move 28. See the above illustration.</p> <p><u>Lawson comments</u>: &quot;I had never played la ximeracak. before, and I was feeling my way through the opening.&nbsp; Tony’s move 10….Wizard e8 - f5 frightened me, as I saw all kinds of threats involving both Wizards and the Pegasus.&nbsp; I decided that best path was to try and break it up immediately, at what I considered to be a cost in material by exchanging a Champion for the most threatening Wizard, the one on the same color as my General.&nbsp; I was then able to drive away the other and exchange Pegasuses (Pegasi?).&nbsp; This left me with the initiative.&nbsp; 19. Wizard c2-d5 won back the material I had lost, and created further threats, leading ultimately to mate.&nbsp; The General moves as the Shogi Gold General, and this limitation of mobility had an important effect.&nbsp; I believe that this was a good design decision by Glenn Overby, because it seems that the jumping pieces would not be able to trap the General otherwise.&quot;</p> <p><u>Quintanilla comments</u>: &quot;I would have to agree with John. Although, even after 11. Champion h3 x f5 I held fairly high hopes for an attack on Gold's King-side. What &quot;discouraged&quot; me was the inexorable advance of John's Sergeants and Pegasi (?). By move 20. Wizard d5 x e8, John made up for his wise &quot;sacrifice&quot; of a Champion for a Wizard and I was against the boards. 24. Sergeant e5 x e6 sealed my fate; a brave but dubious advance by my King not withstanding. What would I do different? I think that I underestimated the mutually supportive power of Sergeants. The large gap in my center proved to be harder to defend than I anticipated. My isolated Sergeant's on Gold's King-side were unable to be used. Instead 10....Wizard e8 - f5 (which got John's exchange going), I should have moved my Sergeants over to my King-side defensively before mobilizing an attack on Gold's King-side.&quot;</p> <p><u>Moves List:</u></p> <table border="1" width="306"> <tr> <td width="20"> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td width="129" align="center"> <p><b>White</b></p> </td> <td width="135" align="center"> <p><b>Black</b></p> </td> </tr> </table> <table border="1" width="306"> <tr> <td width="20">1</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant f2 - f4</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Sergeant d7 - d5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">2</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant h2 - h4</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Sergeant f7 - f5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">3</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant g2 - g3</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Sergeant f5 x f4</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">4</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant g3 x f4</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Sergeant e7 - e5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">5</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant f4 x e5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard d8 x e5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">6</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant c2 - c3</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard e5 x h4</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">7</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Champion h1 - h3</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard h4 - g5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">8</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Knight g1 - f3</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard g5 - f6</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">9</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard d1 - c2</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Knight g8 - e7</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">10</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant d2 - d4</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard e8 - f5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">11</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Champion h3 x f5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Knight e7 x f5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">12</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant d4 - e5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard f6 - c5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">13</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant b2 - b4</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard c5 - d8</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">14</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Pegasus c1 x d5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Sergeant c7 - c6</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">15</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Pegasus d5 x f8</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Champion h8 x f8</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">16</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard e1 - d2</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Champion f8 - e8</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">17</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant e2 - e4</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Knight f5 - h6</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">18</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant b4 - c5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Sergeant c6 x c5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">19</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard c2 - d5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;General c8 - d7</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">20</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard d5 x e8</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;General d7 - e7</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">21</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard e8 x h7</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Champion a8 - c6</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">22</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant e4 - d5</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Champion c6 - e4</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">23</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant d5 - e6</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Champion e4 x e6</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">24</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Sergeant e5 x e6</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;General e7 - f6</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">25</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard d2 - e3</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;General f6 - f5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">26</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard h7 - e8</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;General f5 - e4</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">27</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;General f1 - e2</td> <td width="135">&nbsp;Wizard d8 - e5</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="20">28</td> <td width="129">&nbsp;Wizard e8 - d5</td> </tr> <font SIZE="2"> <tr> <td width="20">&nbsp;</td> </font> <td width="129">checkmate</td> </tr> </table> <p>&nbsp;</p>
