If the double move per turn is removed, Alpha Centauri would lose a significant layer of its complexity, and its claim of being a "very complex game" would no longer hold as strongly.

Without the double move mechanic, the game would become more straightforward and tactical, resembling traditional Chess in its single-move structure. The challenge would still come from the unique piece abilities (like the Centaur's multi-capture rules, the Rotor's rotation, and the Reducer's movement restriction), but these interactions would not be as dynamically combined with other moves. The absence of the double move would simplify decision-making and reduce the game’s overall strategic depth.

While still more complex than Chess due to its unique rules and objectives (like the King and Dame needing to reach the Encounter Zone), Alpha Centauri would not offer the same level of layered strategy without the double move. Therefore, it would not be as complex as the author claims if this mechanic were removed. The game would still have complexity, but it would be less dramatic compared to its original design, and closer to a traditional tactical game like Chess.
