The mate with Wyvern animation is incorrect (this one), Wyvern moves one step there, you probably accidentally put Griffin mate there. Proper mate would look something like this

Hi, searching through comments doesnt work, when I search something I know exists, it will not show up.

Example: https://www.chessvariants.com/index/listcomments.php?search=Crowned+Bishop&order=DESC&submit=Search

Expected result: https://www.chessvariants.com/index/listcomments.php?id=22505

Is that a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Interesting idea, its a great translation of the lion to "western-like" chess. The piece additions work great to limit the power of the lion a bit, and feel natural. Unfortunately the anti-trading rule is more frustrating than fun. I understand that the Lion is the main attraction in this variant, and that given its power its very likely to be traded, but antitrading rules just feel wrong. Perhaps making lion weaker, while keeping the main draw (moving twice) would be better.

I know your werewolf chess variant. You are right that contageon antitrading rule also feels unnatural (you cannot chase away werewolf with weaker piece, opponent can just defend and keep the werewolf).

I guess you are correct that I am not the target audience (I have never tried chu shogi)

Thats cool. The AI doesnt seem to understand checks from Wywerns (ski rook) though, it will happily move its king into check from them.

x x wrote on Wed, May 5, 2021 10:37 PM UTC in reply to H. G. Muller from 09:36 PM:

View. I just set white to orc, move black king to e6 and move wywern to h3 (as a setup), click play and move wywern to e3 to give check. The AI responds with knight to c6, ignoring the check.

It can be argued that if chess is a forced draw from opening position, then first move advantage doesn’t exist at all. Yet even if someone showed proof that chess is drawn game, humans would still atribute some advantage to white. Its not completely unreasonable that someone migth derive advantage from playing with more familiar setup (assuming one would play this variant enough). Quantifying this advantage and comparing it to first move advantage is another story though.

True, this variant is quite big and the changed pieces are behind 2 rows of predetermined "pawns", the shuffled pieces will not affect the board in the opening much. I haven’t considered how large this variant is.

I just realized that in universal diagram, only white can promote (presumably because white pawns are first to be defined)

I dont think the wierd promotion rules for horde are implementable in the diagram. The behemoth rider should be, but it cannot capture 3 pieces in a line (maybe I have mistake in XBetza, but I think it should be WmcaWmcamcaWmcamcabW).

On another note, Giant army is very poorly designed. In Giant vs Giant match, I think white can immediately win material.

x x wrote on Sat, May 8, 2021 01:33 PM UTC in reply to H. G. Muller from 01:17 PM:

Orc is certainly the main issue, but there is also the fact that for werewolf, the promotion zone is smaller than for every other piece.

Interesting variant, i love asymetric variants with elegant rules. The question is how balanced it is, did you balance it with engine?

I have however noticed an issue with the interactive diagram. When I tried palying with the queens, the AI took my queen en passant, I assume that is not intentional.

x x wrote on Sun, Jun 6, 2021 06:18 PM UTC in reply to H. G. Muller from 05:59 PM:

I think you misunderstood. AI checked my queen with pawn, I moved out of harms way (to the side of the pawn) and the pawn captured my queen on a square it wasnt on.

x x wrote on Sun, Jun 6, 2021 07:31 PM UTC in reply to H. G. Muller from 06:51 PM:

Steps to reporduce: put queen on b6, put pawn on a5, start the AI and move the queen to b5
