House of Mirrors Chess. Mirrors and reflective pieces add interesting twists to strategy by making pieces appear in 2 or 3 places at the same time. (8x8, Cells: 87) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

hey, gary. no, i think i understand the movement ok (probably manage to
prove myself wrong soon).

it's more the concept of them being mirrors that i don't get. if the
mirrors are simply floors, it doesn't make any sense to me. the pieces
would just reflect back up onto themselves. logically then, the mirrors
face each other? that's ok, although it makes me think there's a weird
backing like a wall behind each mirror.

but that idea doesn't work so well when there are three mirrors in a
line.

hey greg, help me out. i downloaded the whole zip thing. then i click on the exe. file and choose a game... the board comes up. there are no pieces! i tried a few different games...

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 29, 2006 12:50 PM UTC:
There should be a subdirectory called 'images' and then subdirectories
under that for the different piece sets.

Ok, I checked that and that's right. the images are in subds under
images, they're not out in the main directory.

maybe i still don't get it. is there something else that i can try and
fix?

ok! the first suggestion was right after all... it looks cool. i'm gonna try a few games out.

fergus or antoine,

if you want to show me or tell me how to set up the games and send them out to people, i'll do it.

yeah, four games at a time was fine. the time controls are pretty generous.

jeremy, what happened with that?

if the tournament is indefinitely on hold, is anyone interested in an alternative, less formal tournament in the meantime? maybe based on one inventor's games? someone with a bunch of games to choose from - gifford/duniho/lavieri for example.

Castling in Chess 960. New castling rules for Fischer Random Chess. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 7, 2007 11:24 PM UTC:Poor ★

As a user noted, and is stated in many BEGINNER chess books: Castling is a special move undertaken by both the rook and king, the sole purpose of being able to meet the following: Tuck the king away in a corner (either kingside or queenside) so that it is AWAY from the center and (in most cases) safe from hostile activity. Centralize the rooks so that they can be brought to action along the center files d1 (d8) and f1 (f8).

Fischer's castling rules satisfy the above requirements, while the proposed suggestion is completely illogical and should be discarded.

Many people seem to have a problem with Castling and stalemate rules. Think of castling as moving the king to a special bunker to hide from attack and think of stalemate as the king committing suicide so that your opponent cannot claim to have killed it (which is the objective of the game - to kill the king).

let's do it.

i only just realized you can do it all from the preset page. i just trialed setting up a new tournament round and then assigning a game between jejujeju-carlos. seemed to work. simple.

what's the word from fergus? is antoine around?

what are we going to do then?

1/ continue with tournament 3, anyone who doesn't move simply loses on time and that's that. withdrawals from the tournament also means you lose all your remaining games (only option, isn't it?). are most people still around?

2/ start a new tournament (established games).

3/ joe's BYO idea.

i'm willing to assign games.

i vote 1 or 2. i don't have any games to bring!

carlos carlos wrote on Mon, Aug 20, 2007 10:49 PM UTC:
how about this?

i'll get two games going for everyone (except sam and fergus) after work today. i'll use the same time controls we used for round 1, and the games will be rated.

is that cool?

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 05:23 AM UTC:
sorry, wasn't following the discussion about ratings properly.

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 05:41 AM UTC:
i just assigned the game between adrian and sam as a test to see if it would come up under the right filters when you search on the logs page and the ratings page. this seemed to work. i know that sam is not playing anymore. if adrian moves, sam will presumably time out and it will be logged as a victory for adrian. sorry, sam, for the automatic loss. i'm sure you don't mind too much.
