I just completed a game with my 6 year old. during the end game, he counted 20 moves and called it a sale mate. I informed him it was 40. Well your web site called us both wrong at 50. Thanks!

this is great im teaching a frenind how to play very useful as i dont even need to teach her any more lol Thanks
These rules have been extremely helpful and cover every aspect and odd situation you may come across in a game of chess. The illustrations were a nice touch and help to show the rules and moves being put into action. Thank you for making the rules so clear. ~ 'Sir Chessknight'
Dear David, Thankyou for your positive response, I think your website is great and will happily link it to my website...under construction at the momment. Very informative and best of all fun, my students are going to love it! Sincerely, Greg Pitkanen
Excellent site, very useful. My friends I had not played in over 20 years, and I wasn't very good then. This site has been a wonderful refresher for me, now that I'm retired, and at least I can hold my own with other retirees (friends).
I used this to teach a student about chess! THanks. Charlotte, NC
I think its excellent because you explain it in details and use pictures.
Thanks for your clarity! I'm using this page as a resource reference in my dissertation on chess.
Can we castle on the queenside when the square(in the same row) adjacent to the rook is under attack?
Yes, you can castle queenside when the square next to the Rook's starting square is under attack. The King cannot move over any square that is under attack, but that restriction does not apply to the Rook.
Outstanding primer for the beginner.
i want to play the game
Its definitely a good place for one to brush up the game. I have played the easy chess but some of the moves that is made by the applet are stupid. I did like the UI wherein all safe possible moves are proposed on selection.
Matthew,
Let me be the first to tell you where to go: play.chessvariants.com
One point struck me as odd about your description of castling. You state: 'The King and rook must occupy the same rank (or row)'. Surely the statement is redundant. If the first two conditions are met (that neither the king or rook have yet moved) then they must still both be on the same rank.
Suppose someone promotes a pawn to a rook. The 'redundant' rule prevents the player from castling with the new rook.
i'm so confused about chess... can you please email me and explain the knight? jeanne.koob@labrepco.com
