I just completed a game with my 6 year old. during the end game, he counted 20 moves and called it a sale mate. I informed him it was 40. Well your web site called us both wrong at 50. Thanks!

These rules have been extremely helpful and cover every aspect and odd
situation you may come across in a game of chess. The illustrations were
a
nice touch and help to show the rules and moves being put into action.
Thank you for making the rules so clear.

Excellent site, very useful. My friends I had not played in over 20 years, and I wasn't very good then. This site has been a wonderful refresher for me, now that I'm retired, and at least I can hold my own with other retirees (friends).

Can we castle on the queenside when the square(in the same row) adjacent to the rook is under attack?

Mark Thompson wrote on Mon, May 3, 2004 11:47 AM UTC:
Yes, you can castle queenside when the square next to the Rook's starting square is under attack. The King cannot move over any square that is under attack, but that restriction does not apply to the Rook.

Its definitely a good place for one to brush up the game. I have played
the
easy chess but some of the moves that is made by the applet are stupid.

I did like the UI wherein all safe possible moves are proposed on
selection.

One point struck me as odd about your description of castling. You state: 'The King and rook must occupy the same rank (or row)'. Surely the statement is redundant. If the first two conditions are met (that neither the king or rook have yet moved) then they must still both be on the same rank.

Doug Chatham wrote on Mon, Jun 21, 2004 02:27 PM UTC:
Suppose someone promotes a pawn to a rook. The 'redundant' rule prevents the player from castling with the new rook.
