Actually, the Pinyin transliteration of 马 is mǎ, not ma. Although it is not the Pinyin transliteration of the word, the spelling of mao has long been common in fairy chess literature. There are several systems of Chinese transliteration besides Pinyin, and it may have come from one of these.
