On seeing this page I instinctively liked the look of the set, but found it hard to put the reason into words. I think it's mainly the economy of shapes combined with a certain similarity in conventions (for example relative hrights, distinctiveness of the Knight) to Staunton sets. It reminds me a little of an idea I once heard about for a set made entirely of hemispheres joined together in various ways.
