If the gating issue does not work you could always use the Trojan Horse method to get the Chancellor, ArchBishop, Amazon etc on to an 8x8 board. The end-result can be made to achieve the same effect (see Shatranj of Troy for an example of how the Horse works. 'must be droped not passed the 4th rank,' or something like that if you wanted to avoid drops within the opponent's camp. The Trojan Horse method was introduce in my Catapults of Troy several years ago... I do not know if there are any earlier examples...
