Hello Fergus.

I am of the belief a major issue that would need to be worked out, is
people determining what the protocols for communication will be and
agreeing to use them.

An approach I am seeing that could work, would be to break down each
action distinctly.  Selecting a position is one.  Then selection which
piece(s) in an position to move would be another.  After this, where to
move the piece(s) to follows.  Then you resolve the results of the action
of moving to (like a pawn promotion).  Then you see if there is any other
moves or a pass action.

Between the interface and the play area is each discrete actions that are
passed back and forth.
