This variant is not opposite to retreting chess. Opposite would be game, where pieces moves 1 forward to empty suare.
Another interesting variant (i was thinking of this before): expect for moving from last rank, all pieces always must first move forward* to empty square, and when make normal move. This rule don't apply for pawns. Optional rule - pieces don't have to move 1 forward whenthere is another piece in front of them (it's optional bcause pieces, wich can be easily blocked is interesting, stalemate may be win for last moved player).
* - another variant is moving backward instead forward (expect for first rank).
Another idea: what if one of these variants plays against other?
