I really like this variant. It's simple but adds something new to the game.
I think it would also be interesting to add some optional rules:
A friendly pawn behind its friendly pawn can bypass it by moving diagonally.
The knight has an additional special move.
Special move: The knight can move without capturing an enemy piece two squares horizontally or vertically, provided that there is a friendly
pawn between the target square and the knight.
