I have redirected chessvariants.org to point here at chessvariants.com. I am still having some troubles with making things work here. I tried responding to a subject thread I created on chessvariants.org, but I was unable. However, I can create new subjects and respond to them. Or so I thought. I tried this message with a new subject, and it would not post. I wanted to test responding to a page, but I ran into another problem. The footer scripts are Perl files, not PHP, and I cannot get them to work. I have updated paths and database information, but it still conks out after trying to open the database. I have put print lines in it to see where it goes wrong, and it is right when it tries to open the database. I may have to write new footers in PHP and just stick them in the footer*.html files. In the footers for the play subdomain, pages are not being recognized as indexed. So I still have some things to work on. Also, the main page now does the job of the Whats New page. I believe the home page of a website should be its most frequented page, and in the past it has not been. I want to change that.
The problem with posting the last message was the use of apostrophes. I had to remove them all to get it to post.
I tried responding to my old subject thread without apostrophes, but it did not help.
Probably need to revisit escaping of characters (or better yet, prepared statements) for apostrophes. I am not sure why the new server would cause the problem. Also, you have reverted some changes I made over the last few months. Most noticeably in the menu and the function that displays comments. I will keep an eye out for others. There is at least one recent game submission, "2 Pronged Chess", that has disappeared (along with a comment on it). I like the Whats New combined with the homepage. Its layout needs a little work for small screens (not just mobile). Perhaps it is just me, but I spend about half my time here on the Comments page, so I would like to see a more prominent link to it (maybe giving it a more alluring name too, "Talk" or "Discuss" or something).
The logout script seems to log me out in that I cannot edit my comments or member submissions, but the menu with my name still shows up, and at the login page it thinks I am logged in so I cannot actually log in. *EDIT: inserting this new comment has logged me in.* The list of my unreviewed submissions (/index/yournew.php) is not being populated for me, and I get a 505 error inside the Editor folder. Apostrophes also cause problems in user submissions.
Ben, Can you look into getting comments to work right? I have emailed you FTP and database information, and chessvariants.org is still pointing to the site at hostmonster. I have not yet changed its servers. I have just set it up to redirect people here. So, through FTP access to both versions of the site, you may be able to find what I have reverted by updating my local files instead of the latest files.
I will try tonight. Is it possible/reasonable to stop forwarding to the new host, work out kinks with the scripts there, and when things seem to be working transfer over the latest database? That way people can continue using the old host while we work on things and the data entered during that time can be transferred? (The only problem that comes to mind [but again I am not as tech-savvy as others] is if David wants to kill the old host soon.)
Redirection to play.chessvariants.com should be permanent so that there is no mix-up in the logs of people playing games on Game Courier. This is set up in the cpanel and should be left alone. Redirection of the main domain is handled in the .htaccess file, which you can access through FTP. When you are ready to test things over there, you can comment out the redirection lines with # signs. I should warn that just because something works there does not mean it will work here, and it is getting things to work here that counts. When you are done testing things there, please uncomment the redirection lines in .htaccess and restore the redirection.
I am having some problem keeping sessions going. I thought I had fixed it the other night, but they are not staying around again.
I think I have got sessions working now. I added an extra cookie that the subdomain can get the session id from since it cannot read the session cookie.
I have consolidated some things into a new Contact menu, and Comments appears at the top. That should make comments more prominent in the menu. I changed Info to Misc, since it is mainly a catch-all for things that don't fit into other categories.
All the problems I mentioned last night appear to be fixed.
Scratch that. I still can't respond to a subject I created before moving the database.
