Recognized Chess Variant: Shatranj
Shatranj was the form of chess as it was played for many centuries in the ancient Arabic world, more than a millenium ago. The game was very popular then, and knew its professional players, books, problem compositions, and legends. The game was practically unaltered played in Europe in most of the middle ages.It differs only on several minor rules from its Indian predecessor Chaturanga, and has many things in common with modern chess, its successor.
