hi there. i've just noticed this. i've yet to play any of the variants yet, but can i please sign up for the tournament anyhow? a good way to learn i think!
thanks, i sent you email fergus.
i have two questions about rules i am not completely certain on. 1/ can a pincer pawn capture more than one piece (in one direction)? e.g. if there is a friendly piece on f4, and enemy pieces on f2 and f3, can a pawn move to f1 and capture both? i think this is unlikely, but i want to check. 2/ can withdrawers capture by moving away on the diagonal from an enemy piece? e.g. enemy on g5, can a withdrawer capture it by moving from f4 to e3? thanks.
thanks for the swift replies. that is how i initially thought the withdrawers must operate. but when playing my game of ultima in the tournament, i got in a position to take in this (diagonal) manner, but typed in my move and the piece remained on the board. so i changed my move. until i saw ben's next move, i did not realise that i had to manually (as it were) remove the piece from the board myself with a separate command. never mind! thanks again for the clarification.
could someone check out my game with Laila and advise on the situation - my interpretation is that a move made on the mirror board will send you back to the original board. laila thinks opposite, that once on the mirror board you stay there. i have already misunderstood this game once, so i am probably wrong again.
a couple more questions. 1. can a king take by co-ordinating with the co-ordinator, or does it have to be after the co-ordinator's moves? 2. i assume that a king cannot move into check, and you have to tell your opponent if they do? i was playing against the applet linked off this page, and you have to actually capture the king rather than checkmate it. which is it? if white's co-ordinator is on f1, white's king on b1, and black's king moves onto say b7 from the c file... if the white co-ordinator has a clear run to f7, is black's move therefore illegal?
can i assume that: 1. a bridge builder can move onto a bridge, and from there add/remove adjacent bridges? 2. a bridge builder can cross a bridge, and from there add/remove bridges to the river on the 3 squares 'behind' him?
fergus, i sent you an email a while ago saying that i didn't jot down the payment details before you removed them from the site. did you get my email?
anyone care to comment on rule 2.3. roberto has just implemented it in our game. 'insert his cage (with any contents) orthogonally into the board, shifting the other cells in line until a cage appears at the opposite edge (which must have been empty).' when i first read the rules i thought that the opposite edge which should be empty meant the square that was to be pushed out. roberto obviously took it to mean simply that the other cage couldn't be at the end of that row or column (see our current game). on second reading, i am inclined to agree with him, although the wording is pretty ambiguous... the example doesn't clear things up either. anyone know/have an opinion? another thing is the 'shifting the other cells in line' part... taken literally this seems to mean that the whole cells (not just their contents) get pushed along. this would make things interesting for bishops! what was the intention here?
thanks. i guess i just thought that that rule was too obvious to even be there, but i suppose you have to put everything down just to be clear. this makes the game more complex then.
'When a pawn reaches the 2nd/7th rank, the mover decides how it promotes (the pawn may promote to a Queen).' Is there a restriction on how a pawn may reach the 2nd/7th row? Can it be transported directly there in a cage?
cool game. as far as i can see, the rules don't clarify whether either a ship or a crewman/crewmen can move through annoying empty ships. what's the go?
thanks to fergus for a brilliant tournament. congratulations to antoine, roberto and fergus. . i too had a great time. i certainly enjoyed some games more than others and hope to play them many more times - in particular i enjoyed familiarising myself (to varying degrees) with ultima, pocket mutation, grand chess, eurasian chess and takeover chess. games i have to say i didn't enjoy were cavalier and hexagonal chess, although perhaps both might seem better if i played them a few more times. the only unfortunate thing was that a number of my games were decided one way or the other by whopping blunders. i guess that is bound to happen with games we are fairly unfamiliar with.
mageofmaple-cvgameroom-2005-1-097 i can't seem to access this log either.
count me in. i'll figure out a way to pay in the next week or two. it's new years week here at the moment. i still have to pay for last time as well.
i'm in. also paying through the post. a little disappointed that some of my favorite games missed out, but looking forward to another great tournament.
a couple questions: a standard chess set means one bishop of each color right? i can't choose to have two white-square bishops? the rules don't say anything about captured bario pieces. if one of my undefined pieces is captured should i immediately define it? or can i wait?
i'm easy on the bishops rule so long as i know what it is. i agree with you on the other one as i think it can add a little strategy to the game, probably in the second/third? rosters.
'The cycle is over after the last undefined piece has been defined by a player and then simultaneously all the pieces fall back into their undefined initial state and a new cycle begins.' this could be interpreted a couple different ways as well - EITHER player finishes defining, or BOTH players finish defining... it reads more like the latter, right? although i can see nothing wrong with the former, which would make things interesting - you could tactically end a cycle quickly before your opponent did something. whichever one is correct, if all the pieces are on the board, then it will actually be the second-to-last piece to be defined which will finish the cycle, because then the last is automatically known.
'The rules of castling remain the same although with logical extensions with regard to the potentiality of pieces.' i don't really know what these are. FRC rules perhaps?
how about tournaments involving games by a certain inventor, say a gifford or lavieri or duniho tournament etc. (several other names come to mind too) there seem to be a few inventors with enough good games to make this entertaining.
'A player's move of a ship is prohibited if it immediately undoes the effect of his opponent's last move (done with the same ship).' let's say we have a rook each on a ship. if my opponent moves that ship a3-a8, does that mean i can make any legal move except for back to a3? or can i not move it at all? i favor the first option i think. what does 'undoes the effect' mean here? thanks for your help, dtj or anyone else.
fergus, my game with greg strong hasn't been given any extra time. i'm not sure when the site first went on the blink, but i am pretty sure i would have had time remaining on it. i just logged in and it says i have less than zero seconds remaining.
thanks. the charging knight can move like a king 'sideways and backwards' - does that include a single backwards diagonal move?
http://www.luhringaugustine.com/index.php?mode=current# what's your favorite set? i really like the sets by yayoi kusama and paul mccarthy.
Please confirm on special powers (I ask because the piece descriptions for some pieces don't specifically mention that they don't have special powers): Soldier: Both Overtaker: Both Dimaond Warrior: CH only Lion Man: Both Grand-Bishop: Both Mage: Neither Reducer: H only King: Neither Grand-Cannon: Both Grand-Rook: Both Also, the special powers includes any squares in the fortress. Correct?
if a coordinator moves along a rank (so NOT to a new rank), can it still take a piece on that rank which is on the same file as the coordinator's king? i.e. black king at h2, black coordinator at g3, white pawn at g2. can the coordinator move to g6 and capture the pawn? it is not technically moving into the same rank as the pawn. so i originally thought that this would not be a capture. however, the rules say 'at the end of the move' which make me think it would be a capture. can anyone confirm this?
congratulations, gary! great performance. well done to the others at the top of the table too. thanks fergus, i'll definitely be in for the next tournament whenever it is? had fun in all of my games, even my customary victory on time over thomas hehe... hard to remember all the games now, but i think i got outplayed in most of the games i lost this time around which is usually better than blundering them away. looking forward to the next one!
as usual, thanks for organizing this, fergus. i also vote for as many games as possible.
hey, gary. no, i think i understand the movement ok (probably manage to prove myself wrong soon). it's more the concept of them being mirrors that i don't get. if the mirrors are simply floors, it doesn't make any sense to me. the pieces would just reflect back up onto themselves. logically then, the mirrors face each other? that's ok, although it makes me think there's a weird backing like a wall behind each mirror. but that idea doesn't work so well when there are three mirrors in a line.
bug? my game with je ju seems to have recorded the wrong winner for some reason. Crazyhouse&log=carlos-jejujeju-2006-214-320
bug in the preset? i can't castle... thanks in advance.
There should be a subdirectory called 'images' and then subdirectories under that for the different piece sets. Ok, I checked that and that's right. the images are in subds under images, they're not out in the main directory. maybe i still don't get it. is there something else that i can try and fix?
for me: glinskis hexagonal chess omega chess templar chess time travel chess capablanca random chess modern shatranj
fergus or antoine, if you want to show me or tell me how to set up the games and send them out to people, i'll do it.
jeremy, what happened with that? if the tournament is indefinitely on hold, is anyone interested in an alternative, less formal tournament in the meantime? maybe based on one inventor's games? someone with a bunch of games to choose from - gifford/duniho/lavieri for example.
As a user noted, and is stated in many BEGINNER chess books: Castling is a special move undertaken by both the rook and king, the sole purpose of being able to meet the following: Tuck the king away in a corner (either kingside or queenside) so that it is AWAY from the center and (in most cases) safe from hostile activity. Centralize the rooks so that they can be brought to action along the center files d1 (d8) and f1 (f8).
Fischer's castling rules satisfy the above requirements, while the proposed suggestion is completely illogical and should be discarded.
Many people seem to have a problem with Castling and stalemate rules. Think of castling as moving the king to a special bunker to hide from attack and think of stalemate as the king committing suicide so that your opponent cannot claim to have killed it (which is the objective of the game - to kill the king).
let's do it. i only just realized you can do it all from the preset page. i just trialed setting up a new tournament round and then assigning a game between jejujeju-carlos. seemed to work. simple. what's the word from fergus? is antoine around? what are we going to do then? 1/ continue with tournament 3, anyone who doesn't move simply loses on time and that's that. withdrawals from the tournament also means you lose all your remaining games (only option, isn't it?). are most people still around? 2/ start a new tournament (established games). 3/ joe's BYO idea. i'm willing to assign games. i vote 1 or 2. i don't have any games to bring!
how about this? i'll get two games going for everyone (except sam and fergus) after work today. i'll use the same time controls we used for round 1, and the games will be rated. is that cool?
i just assigned the game between adrian and sam as a test to see if it would come up under the right filters when you search on the logs page and the ratings page. this seemed to work. i know that sam is not playing anymore. if adrian moves, sam will presumably time out and it will be logged as a victory for adrian. sorry, sam, for the automatic loss. i'm sure you don't mind too much.
joe/david/whoever, the ratings page is a good way to keep track of results. however... joe has a victory over fergus. everyone else gains a victory over fergus by default (right?). but these victories won't show up on the logs page (they will never be played/won). there might be more examples of this if any of the question marks don't compete from round 2 on. assigning a bunch of dead games (like the one i just assigned between adrian and sam) doesn't seem like a good answer because those players would lose all the games for the (unofficial) ratings page if they ever return. also a waste of time, although it's doable. does anyone know how to get into this 'game courier tournament #3' page and color in the squares in the chart from time to time to keep it updated? other solutions? just wait till the end?
reminder for people playing avalanche chess: White has a large advantage. White's advantage is reduced in BALANCED AVALANCHE CHESS in which White had no pawn push on the first move.
ok, i think i have assigned everyone two games except: todor tchervenkov calvin pomerantz bogot bogot nasmichael farris you four have one game each. if you move, i'll assign you another game. there's a bunch of anti-king and avalanche chess games, and then a mix to try and get everyone playing two games at once. please double-check that i assigned white to the correct player in your games. note: having no idea what fergus used when tagging the rounds (when defining a new round) i just called them 1,2,3... in order from top to bottom as they appear on the chart on this page.
oops. just ignore that game as far as the tournament goes? i'll get some more games assigned soon.
i plan to assign more games this week when some people have timed out of their second-round games. i'll get it up to four active games each. at the end of each month, i'll do the same thing (assign enough games so that people have four active games). does anyone object to this? if you only want 2 or 3 games going, please say so.
antoine, you know how to delete logs, right? can you please delete these: jejujeju-adrian-2007-245-672 adrian-sam_trenholme-2007-232-275 antoinefourriere-rodriguez-2007-245-678 thanks! i can re-assign that last game properly after it's deleted (or you can if you want). i can't do it while that one still exists. the first two don't need to exist at all.
new games assigned, please check... that will probably be it for a good six weeks. antoine, if you could update the grid again sometime, please do. thanks.
antoine/anyone else who knows how, please delete these logs: bruck-judgmentality-20070316-504 (wrong time limits) rodriguez-sibahi-2007-316-497 (never opens)
sorry for the long delay, out of the country with unpredictable internet access for the last six weeks. more games up... again, check your opponents/colors. also, on games which hadn't been played before, i manually set and slightly altered the time controls to try and avoid the time display error that's been happening. everyone should have 2-4 active games. there are only really 13 players taking part in the tournament. results after all games completed so far: (points/games completed) adrian de la campa 5/7 antoine fourriere 6/7 abdul-raman sibahi 1/4 carloscarlos 3/5 david paulowich 5/6 gary gifford 2/2 greg strong 3/5 je ju 1/5 jeremy good 2/6 joe joyce 1/1 juan rodriguez 1/7 michael schmahl 2/5 todor tchervenkov 3/4 uri bruck 0/5 i guess you could add an extra six wins for everybody if you wanted for all the people who pulled out.
thanks, antoine. i also messed up these modern shatranj games which need to be deleted. tchervenkov-jeju-2007-316-504 penswift-carlos-2007-316-527 i'll assign replacement games later today or tomorrow.
yeah, i meant shatranj of troy. gary, i messed up the time settings. when i saw that game this morning, i had about 18 hours on the clock! abdul, i guess it's the same either way. either everybody gets a win against bogot, or nobody does.
sorry, antoine. the shatranj of troy games are wrong again. i'm pretty sure i entered correct time settings this time, maybe not. i'll just use the default ones i guess. can you delete them again?
i just read joe's comment about the email notifications. how long has this been happening? (i didn't notice because the email address i use is different from the one chessvariants sends out to, i've always just checked the site.) is it the reason a few tournament games have been lost on time recently? if so, what should we do about it? it seems fair to replay any games lost on time for this reason...
new games assigned... do me a favor and check colors, opponents, time controls of your games... antoine, there is one weird game i just saw which hasn't seen a move in 44 days, yet nobody has timed out? any ideas about that one?
i'm not tournament director, but i can answer your question. that game is not a tournament game. tournament games are always assigned i.e. the inviting and accepting are done automatically.
game between antoine and david is now assigned. sorry, i thought i assigned this in the last round. i must have typed in one of the usernames incorrectly.
i just assigned several games. there needs to be some kind of decision on the players who keep timing out. the tournament is almost finished. at the moment, i count 11 active players in the tournament: antoine fourriere adrian alvarez de la campa carlos carlos david paulowich gary gifford je ju joe joyce juan rodriguez michael schmahl todor tchervenkov uri bruck i don't want to spend time assigning all the games that never get played. how about... if anyone who is inactive reads this and wants to keep playing in the tournament they post here within the next couple of weeks and i'll assign all their remaining games? any other ideas/solutions? if it's just the eleven players, there are only the following games that still have to be assigned once players become free: david paulowich - joe joyce joe joyce - michael schmahl michael schmahl - uri bruck i will assign these as other games finish. also... antoine fourriere-todor tchervenkov (i can't find the glinski preset!) finally... last year i accidentally assigned a mir chess 32 game between michael schmahl and greg strong. that game was never meant to be played (greg never moved and lost on time). michael was supposed to play mir chess 32 with gary gifford and that game is now active. good luck!
gary, this is what i was thinking: if the lost players don't confirm an interest within two weeks, they forfeit all their remaining games.
joe, i'm sick of you holding up the tournament with your slow-play! only kidding. if you both make your first move, that should give antoine enough time to see this and change the time settings on the game...
