The promoter is an interesting idea. I'm confused about one thing, though. The board has 9 files, but you only list 8 pieces on the first and last ranks. Which space is empty?
Can Promoters capture? And can Promoters promote? If so, does a Promoter that promotes a Promoter which previously promoted pieces prolifically pay a pretty penny? Perhaps a pound? Perhaps in practice Promoter promotion proliferates profusely, as the Promoters are positioned in proximity preceeding each play's premiere.
Board dimensions are 8x8, it is a mistake (mine) in the description, due to the fact I originally thought the game in 9x8, with Promoters to the left side of the Kings, but in 8x8 with promoters on e4 and e5 the game is much more interesting. Jared, the answer is NO, Promoters can not capture, neither promote. You can promote one of your Pawns to Promoter, but it makes not sense!. Some clarifications of the rules are needed: You can not promote a piece to Pawn in eight rank. I have thought a possible new rule, making more difficult the task of hidden your Promoter, here is the ALTERNATIVE RULE: You can not move your Promoter to a square adjacent to any of your pieces, but you can move your pieces to squares adjacent to your Promoter. I have tested the game in a physical board, and it is really interesting. I am going to prepare a ZRF soon.
I like to play this game with one small difference: That promoters are allowed to capture, but only if it could normally move there as if that square was blank. Also, I use the ALTERNATIVE RULE of not moving your promoter next to your pieces
Well, I am going to make some tests. I am going to prepare a ZRF this weekend to see, and the final 'main' game is going to take in account all the proposals, and I´ll try to make the best decision. Once clarified the rules, a Preset in Game Courier should be fine.
Last comment was mine. Don´t wait a lot of hours to display it.
Promoter promotion is prohibited? Perfect. I personally prefer the prohibition of prehension of pieces by Promoters, as it places the promoters in a pacifistic position where their perilous promoting power is best placed in proximity to pieces of your own. Why pick off pieces when your position is productive for the other player?
Updated!. The revised rules are now available (see the page). Promoters can move as a King without capturing, but only to positions in which there are not adjacent friends. Some natural prohibitions apply to promotions by proximity to the enemy Promoter: You can promote to any captured piece if you move a piece to a square adjacent to the enemy Promoter, but you can not promote a piece to Pawn on 1st. or 8th. rank. The rules for Pawn promotion in 8th. Rank are the same as in Chess.
Here is a basic Preset for this game: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DChess+with+Promoters%26settings%3D Rules are not added. How can I post it to Game Courier?. May editors give me a hand?
Well, it did not work. I need some help for this.
One way you should be able to post the Game Courier preset, is to copy the HTML code in the box on the edit page into the Notes section of your member-submitted page.
Roberto, Your preset URL is missing a value for settings.
Has anyone come up with <i>De</i>moters (for example, a piece that can only capture Pawns and demotes anything else it could capture in ordinary chess)? This strikes me as a way to get a chess army weaker than that described in Betza's <a href='http://www.chessvariants.org/diffmove.dir/feeble.html'>Weakest Chess</a>. I don't know yet if such a game would be playable, though.
I think I am not yet a very good player of CH/w/P, but the game looks much more interesting than I thought at first, according to a few test games against George Duke (2 test games) and my son (1). A rule need to be clarified: 'En Passant' is allowed, regardless the Pawn to be captured remains as Pawn or it is promoted. A rule is going to be put on the carpet for discussion: Promoters movement looks better if it is allowed a free movement between ranks 3-6, instead of the present rule, but this possible change of rule needs some interchange of ideas.
Did you mean to transpose the Knight and Bishop on each player's King side, so that each player has his Bishops on the same color?
Thanks, Fergus. There is an error in the Page´s setup description. Knights and Bishops positions are as usual in Chess.
Lavieri's Promoter has negative value. You'd like to get rid of it, but cannot. The only way to eliminate Promoter is enemy's capturing your Promoter, and he is unlikely to do so. One can think up extremities where capturing the Promoter might occur, a final checkmate in view, but that would be overcome only if you come up with some better move than he/she has planned. Promoter of course lets any captured piece be promotee if opposite piece lands adjacent. So your strategy generally is to get Promoter out of middle of the board and behind lines, where P. is even less likely to be captured. You're stuck with it the duration of every game played so far. Negative value.
Hey, pieces with negative value is very interesting idea! I hope, there
will be some games with diffirent pieces of negative value!
How about pieces wich can promote or demote other pieces according to
pieces hierarchy: pawn
It should be noted that while a player has their full complement of pieces the enemy Promoter cannot promote at all. What happens when a Pawn is promoted by the usual end-of-trek means and then captured? Can the enemy Promoter then promote to the piece to which the Pawn was promoted?
To recent comments on pieces with negative value, Betza has ''Worse Than Worthless.''
