I noticed that too, and that is what I had thought; thanks for sharing that!
I guess that is because the variants they study are hardly what we would consider variants here. Mostly they are miniscule modifications of the rules, such as making stalemate a draw, outlawing pawn double-push, or castling.
I'm surprised that this study does not get more attention here.

Yes it's true, they are not huge changes, anyhow it is quite interesting even for us, for example to look at the differences induced by different pawns.
