Snake vs. Mongoose. White is supplemented by Mongooses, while Black has Snakes. (10x10, Cells: 100) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

@Editors: The Index Information for this page still needs to be edited to, "White is supplemented by Mongooses, while Black has Snakes."

(I don't have the ability to do it myself.)

That explains it! And that's what I'll fix. Thanks, H.G.!

Edit: I did, and now the icons are gone for me, too.

Edit #2: I figured out the problem. It works fine now for me, and should for everyone else too.

You are using fen2.cgi from the winboard.nl website. Which is blocked by the browser for most people because it is http. Your other submissions use fen2.php on CVP itself.

That's very weird. I'm using fen2 to display the pieces, which I'm also doing with Food Fight and Rotary Chess, which apparently came up fine. I'm not sure what's different about this one, as opposed to the others.

A. M. DeWitt wrote on Fri, Jan 26 12:58 AM UTC:

The Interactive Diagram completely lacks piece images, and so just looks like an empty board to me. Please fix this.

Other than that, this page looks pretty good. Simple, but effective.

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Sun, Dec 31, 2023 07:01 PM UTC:

The Interactive Diagram is telling me that the Mongoose is slightly more powerful than a Snake, so I'm going to bite the bullet and call this one ready to go (subject, as always, to any editorial questions).

I'd appreciate if someone who is actually reasonably good at chess could give this a whirl on the Interactive Diagram, and let me know if the Mongooses are really as badly hobbled at game's start as they seem to be when I play it. If not, then I think (with the updating of the Index information, as noted below) that it's ready for publication; if it is, then I don't think I can fix it and I might as well delete it.

It looks like the Index Information will have to be edited to "White is supplemented by Mongooses, while Black has Snakes."

(It's not ready yet, but I do know that much.)

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Thu, Dec 14, 2023 07:00 PM UTC:

A quick test with the Interactive Diagram shows me that this has a big problem: the Snakes can come out easily, but the Mongooses are blocked by the Knights and (especially) Royals.

This may need to become a 10x10 game, with a bit more room for the Mongooses to maneuver.

Addendum: It also definitely needs to have the Index Information text changed (because the Snakes and Mongooses are replacing the Bishops instead of the Kings), but I'll wait until I have the above problem figured out before posting the actual text I'd want.

💡📝Bob Greenwade wrote on Sat, Nov 25, 2023 06:10 PM UTC:

Given the choice between (1) making the Royal Snake and Royal Mongoose into [vW?F] and [sW?F] respectively, or (2) simply replacing the Bishops instead, I decided to go with the latter. I'll do the former some other time.

PS: @editor: This means the index description will have to be edited to say "Bishop" instead of "King."

Hm... clearly, I didn't think this through enough.

Maybe I should make one or two of the other pieces Iron.

Ummm, sliding royals... So isn't this game a certain draw? What material would you need to force checkmate on a bare Snake or Mongoose?

This is a pretty simple variant, so it only took a little while to have ready.

Which, I think, it is.
