Not true. For instance, in Chess3 if the Rook is located on 1A1 it can move to: 1A2, 1A3, 1A4, 1A5, 1A6, 1A7, 1A8, 1B1, 1C1, 1D1, 1E1, 1F1, 1G1, 1H1, 2A1, 3A1. In Millenium 3D Chess, a Rook at 1A1 can additionally move to 2A2, 3A3, 2B1 and 3C1. The Millenium 3D Queen also has the same additional mobility accross levels as the Millenium 3D Rook. In Chess3 a Pawn on 1B2 can move to: 1B3, 1B4, 2B2 or 3B2 on his first move. In Millenium 3D Chess, a Pawn at 1B2 can additionally move to 2B3 or 3B4. Promotion rules in Chess3 are not clear. Chess3 doesn't make any mention about Castling or En Passant in the rules, Millenium 3D does. Full rules for Millenium 3D Chess are at: http://webspace.webring.com/people/pm/millennium3dchess/millennium_3d_chess.pdf

Fergus, When reviewing completed games, after pressing the View button, the next move is no longer automatically filled in in the text box, so that if one pressed the View button repeatedly the game would progress a move at a time. Now we have to locate the next move within the drop down each time which makes reviewing games very painful.

Agree with H.G. Castling makes both positions different, and no symmetrical. For instance, g-castling (O-O): In 'B B R K R N N Q' g-castling is accomplished by the King jumping 3 squares, and the Rook moving once. In 'Q N N R K R B B' g-castling is accomplished by just having the King jump over the f-rook, while the rook stays on the same spot. Also, b-castling in one of the positions is not equivalent to g-castling on the other. There is no symmetry because of castling.
Just got in the mail today a set of Dragon Chess I purchased on ebay. Not too impressed with the 3-squares movement of the Dragon... But a nice looking set to have for playing variants (I'll most likely redefine the movement of the Dragon). My 9 year old son loved the look of the set, specially the Dragons. I saw these Renaissance pieces years ago (never owned this type of set) when I was in university. What I paid for the Dragon Chess set was money well spent, and it is in brand new condition.
Thanks for the questions Nick. I updated the page to address all your concerns. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The Guard's on Korean Chess don't move like Wazirs. They can also move diagonally on the diagonals in the palace. The King in Xiangi does move like a Wazir, and Chinese Chess is another historical old variant.

I agree with Carlos, Daniil's proposal is quite interesting...
I would play it on 9x9, it reminds me of Modern Chess (with reverse symmetry).
Of course, Bishops would start up on same color squares. You are using Carlos Cetina's Bishop Conversion Rule to solve that problem.
Two other options you can try are:
- Bishop Adjustment Rule
- Using Ajax Bishops instead of regular Bishops
What do you call this variant? Frolov Chess!
====
I present: Frolov Chess - Ajax Bishops Variation
With Ajax Bishops (Bishops get an additional one-step non-capturing orthogonal move (Wazir)).
I like the name Chancellor better for the N+R, and ArcBishop for the N+B compound.
Like Ajax Chess, this variation uses reverse symmetry. The initial placement of Chancellor and ArcBishop can be interchanged, but reversed symmetry must be maintained.
Pawns can move one or two steps at any time until reaching (but including) the middle (5th) rank. This will create several new opportunities for en passant captures.
This means that a white pawn at e5 can play e5-e6 or e5-e7; but a white pawn at e6 can only play e6-e7.
Does anyone want to play a game?

No problem Thomas. Everything is back in track. You may want to update the email address on your profile though.
Fergus, My opponent Thomas has made an illegal take back of moves in our 3rd round Euchess game. How do we return the game to the position after my last legal move, which he also took back. I sent my opponent an email to try to sort this out, but his email address is no longer valid, and the email bounced. Can you please stop the clock in this game until the issue gets resolved? Thanks. Cool! Now we also have the Ajax Xiangqi King (or General) (an Ajax Wazir) to add to the royal repertoire! ;-) http://www.chessvariants.org/index/msdisplay.php?itemid=MSajaxxiangqi
The Royal piece in Xiangqi is a Wazir (the General).

Charles, Not sure I followed you there. The game we are playing is with all pieces gaining their Ajax moves. The King, Guard and Elephant definitely have specific improvements over their Chinese Chess counterparts related to the Palace and River. But the other pieces: Rook, Cannon and Knight (Horse) all also get Ajax moves. Rooks and Cannons have a 1-step non-capturing diagonal move. The Knight (like the Elephant) get a 1-step non-capturing move in every direction (orthogonal or diagonal). Maybe I misunderstood your comment...
Gee thanks! Feels like opening Pandoras' box... I'm actually going to enjoy much Ajax Xiangqi! My problem with Xiangqi was the uselessness of the Elephant (Alfil). But the Ajax version, while still limited to it's own side of the board, can reach all squares! That's an improvement!
Interesting idea. Want to try it? http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DAjax+Xiangqi%26settings%3DCambaluc http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DAjax+Xiangqi%26settings%3DChinese I'll send you and invite. Interesting new elephant! Now it can reach ALL squares behind the river. Pieces move as in Xiangqi, with the additional Ajax non-capturing steps. All other Xiangqi rules are the same. King/General: moves and captures 1-step orthogonally, plus Ajax 1-step diagonal; can't leave the palace Advisor/Guards: moves and captures 1-step diagonally, plus Ajax 1-step orthogonal; can't leave the palace Rook/Chariot: regular rook, plus Ajax 1-step diagonal Horse/Knight: regular chinese knight, plus Ajax 1-step around perimeter Elephant: regular chinese elephant, plus Ajax 1-step around perimeter; can't cross the River Cannon: regular chinese cannon, plus Ajax 1-step around perimeter Pawns/Soldiers: regular chinese pawn - No Ajax additional moves.
Hi Antoine,
Can you please add the 8 pieces below to the Alfaerie Many set?
I'm working on a Makruk variant with new Burmese Elephants (Ferz + 1-orthogonal space in specific north, south, east or west directions).
Thanks.

I agree about the confusion regarding the pawns. Probably a copy and paste of rules from the Modern Shatranj page, as not even the pieces in the diagram match the ones in the game in the tournament. But in the first paragraph it does say that the game uses modern pawn rules (= 2 squares initial move + en passant). Regarding the Elephant, I wouldn't call it a 'Bishop' like piece that can jump. It's actually an Alfil (that jumps) that can also play like a Ferz.
Thanks Charles!
I have to admit I like the 'Ajax Rider' concept you coined together!
I will experiment with these riders later, especially the Ajax Rider Rook.
Thanks also for the link on Bolyar Chess!
Funnily enough, I am experimenting an Ajax Citadels variant with Carlos Cetina, and lately (after Omega chess) I seem to find Citadel variants all over the place...
I find interesting the Bolyar concept of a higher promotion at the Citadel (to Generals) and may explore this concept.
Ajax Rider Rook (represented below by a Boylar Queen): It moves & captures like a Rook, and it may also play as a non-capturing Bishop.

Hi Antoine Fourrière, Can you please add my two new pieces below for the Ajax Elephant to the 'Alfaerie: Many' piece set? Can you also add them to Alfaerie for Ajax set? I'm assuming you are going to call them: White Elephant => 'alfaeriemisc/carrillo/wajaxelephant.gif' Black Elephant => 'alfaeriemisc/carrillo/bajaxelephant.gif'
Hi Antoine Fourrière, (or Fergus),
Can you please add my two new pieces below for the Ajax Elephant to the 'Alfaerie: Many' piece set?
It's a Burmese Elephant (Shogi Silver) that can also move one (non-capturing) step sideways or backwards.
Thanks.

Everyone should be receiving the error below in their Ajax Orthodox Chess games: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ':' in /home1/chessvar/public_html/play/pbm/sets/alfaerie-ajax.php on line 2 Actually the error is affecting all my Ajax variants presets. I asked Fergus last night to update the Ajax Piece set for Game Courier with a few more pieces for my Ajax Wars game coming up, but unfortunately there must have been a typo or something that messed up the Alfaerie for Ajax piece set I use in my Ajax variants. I asked Fergus to take a look at it, and hope that the problem will be resolved soon.
H.G.
If you use the elephant, just call it a Burmese Elephant, which does move just like a Silver.
Sittuyin (Burmese Chess) is closely related to Makruk. And the Elephant piece is called a Sin in Burmese, so you can still use the initial S for the piece.
I actually use Seirawan Elephants for the Thai Bishops when I play Makruk OTB. Here is my western Makruk set:

Thanks Carlos! I'm honored to see my Ajax Chessmen migrating into other inventors variants. Sure I accept your challenge for Ajax Bigamous Chess. Send me an invite. My preference would be with Ministers, but Ajax Bigamous Chess is your variant, so I will play it according to your rules. Let me know if you need any help building the Game Courier preset.

Happy new year Nick! 10 hours to go here in Ajax (Canada). Jose
How about 5 drop rounds altogether? 1st round drops: Player's 5th rank 2nd round drops: Player's 4th rank 3rd round drops: Player's 3th rank 4th round drops: Player's 2nd rank 5th round drops: Player's 1st rank In each round a player is allowed to drop up to 10 pieces.
I agree the setup phase may be tedius. It does looks like an interesting game to play OTB.

What is misleading in his description is that he calls >>it a minor piece. The Minister, Pasha, Mastodon or whatever you call it >>is a major piece, though a short-range one. That is correct, the Ajax Minister can capture on it's 2-square leap. I stand corrected, the Ajax Minister is a major piece. I'll update the rule page. Garth said: >>The rules of Ajax Orthodox Chess specifically state that the Minister >>may capture with its one-step move. The different colors are probably >>to show that it leaps to the 2nd perimeter rather than blockably >>sliding. Absolutely correct Garth. I needed different colors to indicate that the 2-step move was actually a leap, and from the text I thought it was obvious (except for the 'minor piece' typo) that the Ajax Minister could capture with both it's 1-step move or 2-square leap. I'll clarify further in the rules page.
Do the Pawns only capture diagonally forward in this game? Or can they also capture straight forward?
This preset for Ajax Orthodox Chess is almost complete: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DAjax+Orthodox+Chess%26settings%3DAlfaerie1 It enforces all the Ajax movement rules, allows the dropping of Ajax Ministers, castling, en passant, etc. The only thing that it can't do is tell that the King is in check when attacked by the Ajax Minister. Fergus (or anyone else), can you please help me fix this final issue? Thanks.
Fergus, I sent you an email with the include file for Ajax Orthodox Chess. Can you please upload it so that I can start testing the preset? Thanks.

Fergus, Run it! Call it something else if you want! I share your same values on adding novelty and variety to Chess. How many variants did you have so far for Next Chess? Just 3? Lets have a firendly Trio tournament. 3 players, 3 variants, 2 games per variant. Don't throw away the idea and excitement away just because one person wanted to make something different out of your tourney.
Rich, I don't know all of Fergus rules for the tournament yet, but in MY opinion, I do not like your idea of just playing one variant, and the champion defending the title with someone else's variant. We all design variants because we want to play them, and we don't join tournaments (my opinion) to just play someone else's. I like the idea of playing a mix of variants by different designers (including one's too) and letting the champion be the best overall player in all the variants mix. My 2 cents. Jose
Fergus, Did you have a chance to look at what's wrong with this game? http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-josesanfer-2004-151-422 Can you change the status of this game to finished? Thanks.
I retract my initial comment regarding the lack of usefullness of the river in this game. I've played a few games on Zillions and now see the tactical need of preventing pawns to capture sideways before crossing the river. I'm still not fully convinced though of the Pawns' diagonal capturing ability after crossing the river.
Fergus,
I will submit Ajax Random Chess as my variant for NextChess4.
Simple to play, OTB it can be played with the usual orthodox chess equipment; plus two markers: fairy pieces or checkers men, to represent the Ajax Ministers.

Thanks David. Both pieces surely meet the same principle of 'non-capturing adopted steps' in Ajax Chess.
I really like the new Mandarin in this game! Kudos to Zheng Lei for this Mandarin invention!
Charles Gilman said:...the Ajax pieces, which add an extra non-capturing move to a piece which can move with or without capturing it all its original directions.
Just found a piece with similar properties to the Ajax pieces: with non-capturing moves added to a piece which can move with or without capturing in all its original directions.
The Mandarin in Wuji Chinese Chess.
This new Mandarin can move (and capture) diagonally like in Chinese Chess, but it can also jump to any empty square within the fortress adjacent horizontally or vertically to the player's own King. The jumped square must be empty, therefore the Mandarin can't capture with this extra 'adopted' move.

What's the use of the river then? Just to define the point where the pawns get their aditional moves? If this is the case, this game could have been even better without the River altogether, allowing the Pawns their full range of moves from the start. I downloaded the Zillions file. So pawns here (once they cross the river) can also move diagonally forward (in addition to sideways). You should add this fact (pawn's diagonal forward move) to the exceptions list in the rules page.
I just fixed the log to add the constant. The initial position is: RKRNBBQN http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-josesanfer-2004-151-422 Inside of the game itself it recognizes the checkmate and that white won. But this game is still showing in my list of games as an active game, and I can't delete it, as I get the error that I'm not allowed to delete the log.
Alternately Fergus, can you change the status of this game to Finished? http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-josesanfer-2004-151-422
Sounds like an interesting game... I don't speak chinese, so the only characters that I recognize are the ones from chinese chess. Can you identify by name the other new (for me) characters on the rules? I'm interested in this new (for me) Bomb piece. You said that when a Bomb captures pieces except other Bomb, Bomb is removed from the board. Does this mean that a Bomb can not attack another Bomb? or that only the captured Bomb is removed from the board?
Fergus said: But this game avoids these faults (Ultra Chess), because the pieces cannot capture with their additional powers of movement.
Absolutely!
In a simple way (in my opinion) Ajax Chess allows players to increase their tactical play without sacrificing or taking away the distinctiveness of the orthodox pieces.
Ajax Chess was an independant creation to Ultra Chess. I never heard of Ultra Chess until David Paulowich's comment below pointed out the similarity.
As I had pointed out earlier, this position shows one reason why I didn't want my Ajax Rooks, Bishops and Knights to be able to capture with their 'adopted' moves:
This position is from my game with Vitya Makov is after 5.Bi7 with the Bishop pinning Black's Knight.
Should the Black Knight be able to capture on it's one-square 'adopted' moves (like it could in Ultra Chess), this type of pins would be impossible, for ... Nxi7 would remove the threat, which would make the game boring, and eliminate some of the chess tactics (i.e. the simple Pin above) we are acustommed to.

Fergus, Can you delete this one too? http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-josesanfer-2004-151-422 I checkmated my opponent a few years ago, yet the game never changed status to completed, and still shows in my active game list. I get the same error that Jeremy got below about not having permission to delete it Thanks. Jose
Contemporary Random Chess formally adopts Charles Daniel's King to Bunker Leap rule.
Thanks Fergus!!! The change of current constant worked perfectly! Good thing... because I had placed one of the pieces in the wrong place, so my initial constant was wrong anyway. :-) Modern Random Chess log fixed: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Modern+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-sissa-2008-125-050
Mine went away too. I change the board pieces and the board type, and suddenly it started working. Weird...
Thanks Fergus. Are you going to change the program so that it can actually update the constants even if they already exist? There are many logs to go and we (humans) are bound to make mistakes here and there... :-) What is the value of the constant right now? The value I want it to have is: RKBNNQBRA which is the position for White. The Pre-code logic is set to copy and revert the order of the Black pieces based on the White position. Or is it actually working backwards? And what I actually set was the Black position and the logic reverted the position for White? Can you delete the constant?
1st: I go to this URL (I use my correct password, of course...) http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Modern+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-sissa-2008-125-050&constants_firstrank=RKBNNQBRA&settings=MRC&userid=j_carrillo_vii&password=????????&submit=Fix 2nd: I get the message below saying the log was fixed: You log has been fixed. Done. 3rd: I go to the link below to check the link is no longer broken: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Modern+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-sissa-2008-125-050 4th: I get the error messge below: ILLEGAL: M h1-g3 on turn 14:There was no M on h1. The piece on h1 is a R.Go back and try again. 5th: Notes The initial position for this game is: RKBNNQBRA Where A is an Archbishop on h1. In the precode there is an alias to use M instead of A (M for minister) It keeps telling me there is a R there. I used the opposite order for the pieces as well (ARBQNNBKR) to see if it made a difference, but it gave me the same error, saying that there was a R at h1.
Fergus to Jose: >In the section of code performed when firstrank doesn't exist, you didn't >create the firstrank constant. I think I now did it, but it's still doesn't work. Same error: ILLEGAL: M h1-g3 on turn 14:There was no M on h1. The piece on h1 is a R.Go back and try again. Can you please fix the pre-code for Modern Random Chess to take the Fix? I'll learn from that and then get it for my other random variants. Thanks Jose
paper Shogi set: http://www.hollandnumerics.demon.co.uk/pdf/SHOGI_SET.PDF
Fergus, I'm playing my first ever Shogi game. When it's my turn, the pieces are displayed off the center of the squares, shifted half way up, on the middle of the lines above their squares. When I look at the link for the game to see it (not when it's my turn) the pieces are perfectly in the middle. My opponent says that he is seeing everything fine. Any ideas what is wrong? Jose
Fergus, Can you help me fix the Modern Random Chess preset? http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DModern+Random+Chess%26settings%3DMRC I did the changes (I think) as per your FRC sample, but it's still not working.
I'm going to adopt the algebraic notation below for your Bunker Leap in my variants: Kx>>yy Where x is the departure square for the King and yy the destination square of the Bunker Leap (b1, g1, b8, g8) Kd>>g1 = King leaps from d(1) square to g1.
[Update] Fergus, I fixed the Pre-game in the Modern Random Chess preset as per your FRC sample, and I'm using this URL: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Modern+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-sissa-2008-125-050&constants_firstrank=RKBNNQBRA&settings=MRC&userid=j_carrillo_vii&password=????????&submit=Fix Even though it tells me it's fixed, I try the link to the game, and it still doesn't work. = = = ILLEGAL: M h1-g3 on turn 14:There was no M on h1. The piece on h1 is a R.Go back and try again.
>>I have added a way to add constants by editing the URL to a log. For example: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=fergus-j_carrillo_vii-2004-138-730&constants_firstrank=RQNBBNKR Another comment Fergus. This constant may work for direct symetrical setups, like Fischer Random Chess. But how about reverse symmetrical setups like Contemporary Random Chess and Modern Random Chess? or independently random setups like English Random Chess? Perhaps the constant in the link should include but white and black setups. Maybe something like: RQNBBNKR-rqnbbnkr
>> BANNED INPUT: d8-c8;a8-d8 on turn 18: >> MOVE: a8-d8 and other moves from one space to another are banned here. http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-fergus-2004-138-495&constants_firstrank=RQNKNRBB&settings=Abstract >>Note that the last one gets past its initial illegal message but then has a >>problem with a castling move written in two parts. That might have to be >>fixed manually. Fergus, The reason that castling was a double move was that the King move by itself (k d8-c8) was a legal move, even without castling. You should allow multiple moves for situations like this one. Unless, the preset would have understood the rook move (r a8-d8) to be castling. Would this rook move had not given an error about not been able to capture one's own pieces?
Nice! The Bunker Leap is simple, yet efficient! I like it! Do you have any special notation to denote this leap? i.e. Kd>>g1 or something like that? I will adapt this rule to my Contemporary Random Chess game, which already features symmetrical castling with the King ending on the b & g squares. Well done Charles!
Carlos, Just played out the moves on a blank board (only with pawns), so trial an error, and got the right board positions. I love random positions, so I was the one player punished the most... No big deal... At least I'm going to get the links restored! ;-)
Great Fergus! Not sure I understand how to use them to store initial random positions. Can you please give us an example?
Thanks Fergus. Here we go: Fischer Random Chess: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=carlos-j_carrillo_vii-2004-130-156 BNQRNBKR - bnqrnbkr http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=fergus-j_carrillo_vii-2004-138-730 RQNBBNKR - rqnbbnkr http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-fergus-2004-138-495 RQNKNRBB - rqnknrbb Contemporary Random Chess: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Contemporary+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-deep_thinker-2008-146-176 NRNQBKRB - brkbqnrn Modern Random Chess: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Modern+Random+Chess&log=j_carrillo_vii-sissa-2008-125-050 RKBNNQBRA // arbqnnbkr
OK Fergus. I'll do my best. Let's get started! Can you email me the logs to these two Fischer Random Chess games? Or somehow, can you give me access to the game logs? Jose http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=carlos-j_carrillo_vii-2004-130-156 http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Fischer+Random+Chess&log=fergus-j_carrillo_vii-2004-138-730
Thanks Antoine. Sorry, you made the Black Ajax Falcon invisible, but not the White one. The White Ajax Falcon shows a gray background when used: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DAjax+Wars+Chess%26settings%3DAlfaerie Can you fix it? Thanks.
That makes sense. I take it the initial position setup was not originally saved as part of the log, nor was the seed. Is this the case still? or just for the older logs? Is there any way to recover these old logs? If you email me the log moves, I can attemp to reverse recover the initial positions.
WOW! Why so many of my old games can't be accessed anymore? The ones I wanted deleted were the ones still showing as active ongoing games which I couldn't reach anymore. Fergus, I did notice some of my games couldn't be replayed after the last major upgrade of the site (I think it was moving to a new server). I wouldn't want my old completed games to be deleted, if possible. Can they be fixed? If not, can I get the moves played in the games so that I keep the logs? Thanks.
Fergus, You should remove the move validating logic when one is trying to delete a game log. I have many games that I want to delete from my active games list, but can not, because the logic of the moves doesn't match the existing preset. I can't change the preset (it's not mine) so I get stuck with game that I am not playing and do not want anymore. Example: maeko-j_carrillo_vii-2009-299-563

Can you please convert to transparent mode, and upload the Makruk pieces below to a new Makruk piece type for the Game Courier?
Thanks.
