Not true.

For instance, in Chess3 if the Rook is located on 1A1 it can move to: 1A2, 1A3, 1A4, 1A5, 1A6, 1A7, 1A8, 1B1, 1C1, 1D1, 1E1, 1F1, 1G1, 1H1, 2A1, 3A1.

In Millenium 3D Chess, a Rook at 1A1 can additionally move to 2A2, 3A3, 2B1 and 3C1.

The Millenium 3D Queen also has the same additional mobility accross levels as the Millenium 3D Rook.

In Chess3 a Pawn on 1B2 can move to: 1B3, 1B4, 2B2 or 3B2 on his first move.

In Millenium 3D Chess, a Pawn at 1B2 can additionally move to 2B3 or 3B4.

Promotion rules in Chess3 are not clear.

Chess3 doesn't make any mention about Castling or En Passant in the rules, Millenium 3D does.

Fergus,

When reviewing completed games, after pressing the View button, the next move is no longer automatically filled in in the text box, so that if one pressed the View button repeatedly the game would progress a move at a time.

Now we have to locate the next move within the drop down each time which makes reviewing games very painful.

Agree with H.G.

Castling makes both positions different, and no symmetrical.

For instance, g-castling (O-O):

In 'B B R K R N N Q' g-castling is accomplished by the King jumping 3 squares, and the Rook moving once.

In 'Q N N R K R B B' g-castling is accomplished by just having the King jump over the f-rook, while the rook stays on the same spot.

Also, b-castling in one of the positions is not equivalent to g-castling on the other.

There is no symmetry because of castling.

Just got in the mail today a set of Dragon Chess I purchased on ebay.

Not too impressed with the 3-squares movement of the Dragon...

But a nice looking set to have for playing variants (I'll most likely redefine the movement of the Dragon).

My 9 year old son loved the look of the set, specially the Dragons.

I saw these Renaissance pieces years ago (never owned this type of set) when I was in university.

What I paid for the Dragon Chess set was money well spent, and it is in brand new condition.

I agree with Carlos, Daniil's proposal is quite interesting...

I would play it on 9x9, it reminds me of Modern Chess (with reverse symmetry).

Of course, Bishops would start up on same color squares. You are using Carlos Cetina's Bishop Conversion Rule to solve that problem.

Two other options you can try are:
- Bishop Adjustment Rule
- Using Ajax Bishops instead of regular Bishops

What do you call this variant? Frolov Chess!

====

I present: Frolov Chess - Ajax Bishops Variation

With Ajax Bishops (Bishops get an additional one-step non-capturing orthogonal move (Wazir)).

I like the name Chancellor better for the N+R, and ArcBishop for the N+B compound.

Like Ajax Chess, this variation uses reverse symmetry. The initial placement of Chancellor and ArcBishop can be interchanged, but reversed symmetry must be maintained.

Pawns can move one or two steps at any time until reaching (but including) the middle (5th) rank. This will create several new opportunities for en passant captures.

This means that a white pawn at e5 can play e5-e6 or e5-e7; but a white pawn at e6 can only play e6-e7.

Does anyone want to play a game?

Charles,

Not sure I followed you there.

The game we are playing is with all pieces gaining their Ajax moves.

The King, Guard and Elephant definitely have specific improvements over their Chinese Chess counterparts related to the Palace and River.

But the other pieces: Rook, Cannon and Knight (Horse) all also get Ajax moves.

Rooks and Cannons have a 1-step non-capturing diagonal move.

The Knight (like the Elephant) get a 1-step non-capturing move in every direction (orthogonal or diagonal).

Maybe I misunderstood your comment...

King/General: moves and captures 1-step orthogonally, plus Ajax 1-step diagonal; can't leave the palace

Advisor/Guards: moves and captures 1-step diagonally, plus Ajax 1-step orthogonal; can't leave the palace

Rook/Chariot: regular rook, plus Ajax 1-step diagonal

Horse/Knight: regular chinese knight, plus Ajax 1-step around perimeter

Elephant: regular chinese elephant, plus Ajax 1-step around perimeter; can't cross the River

Cannon: regular chinese cannon, plus Ajax 1-step around perimeter

Pawns/Soldiers: regular chinese pawn - No Ajax additional moves.

I agree about the confusion regarding the pawns. Probably a copy and paste of rules from the Modern Shatranj page, as not even the pieces in the diagram match the ones in the game in the tournament.

But in the first paragraph it does say that the game uses modern pawn rules (= 2 squares initial move + en passant).

Regarding the Elephant, I wouldn't call it a 'Bishop' like piece that can jump. It's actually an Alfil (that jumps) that can also play like a Ferz.

Thanks also for the link on Bolyar Chess!

Funnily enough, I am experimenting an Ajax Citadels variant with Carlos Cetina, and lately (after Omega chess) I seem to find Citadel variants all over the place...

I find interesting the Bolyar concept of a higher promotion at the Citadel (to Generals) and may explore this concept.

That is correct, the Ajax Minister can capture on it's 2-square leap. I
stand corrected, the Ajax Minister is a major piece.

I'll update the rule page.

Absolutely correct Garth. I needed different colors to indicate that the 2-step move was actually a leap, and from the text I thought it was obvious (except for the 'minor piece' typo) that the Ajax Minister could capture with both it's 1-step move or 2-square leap.

I'll clarify further in the rules page.

Just 3? Lets have a firendly Trio tournament.

3 players, 3 variants, 2 games per variant.

Rich,

I don't know all of Fergus rules for the tournament yet, but in MY
opinion, I do not like your idea of just playing one variant, and the
champion defending the title with someone else's variant.

We all design variants because we want to play them, and we don't join
tournaments (my opinion) to just play someone else's.

I like the idea of playing a mix of variants by different designers
(including one's too) and letting the champion be the best overall player
in all the variants mix.

My 2 cents.

Just found a piece with similar properties to the Ajax pieces: with non-capturing moves added to a piece which can move with or without capturing in all its original directions.

The Mandarin in Wuji Chinese Chess.

This new Mandarin can move (and capture) diagonally like in Chinese Chess, but it can also jump to any empty square within the fortress adjacent horizontally or vertically to the player's own King. The jumped square must be empty, therefore the Mandarin can't capture with this extra 'adopted' move.

What's the use of the river then?

Just to define the point where the pawns get their aditional moves?

If this is the case, this game could have been even better without the River altogether, allowing the Pawns their full range of moves from the start.

I downloaded the Zillions file.

So pawns here (once they cross the river) can also move diagonally forward (in addition to sideways).

You should add this fact (pawn's diagonal forward move) to the exceptions list in the rules page.

Absolutely!

In a simple way (in my opinion) Ajax Chess allows players to increase their tactical play without sacrificing or taking away the distinctiveness of the orthodox pieces.

Ajax Chess was an independant creation to Ultra Chess. I never heard of Ultra Chess until David Paulowich's comment below pointed out the similarity.

As I had pointed out earlier, this position shows one reason why I didn't want my Ajax Rooks, Bishops and Knights to be able to capture with their 'adopted' moves:

This position is from my game with Vitya Makov is after 5.Bi7 with the Bishop pinning Black's Knight.

Should the Black Knight be able to capture on it's one-square 'adopted' moves (like it could in Ultra Chess), this type of pins would be impossible, for ... Nxi7 would remove the threat, which would make the game boring, and eliminate some of the chess tactics (i.e. the simple Pin above) we are acustommed to.

Fergus,

The reason that castling was a double move was that the King move by itself
(k d8-c8) was a legal move, even without castling.

You should allow multiple moves for situations like this one.

Unless, the preset would have understood the rook move (r a8-d8) to be castling. Would this rook move had not given an error about not been able to capture one's own pieces?
